One Of A Kind Chair

Have you ever owned a chair that fit you perfectly, an amazing fit that took all the cares of the world away, a feeling of comfort that had no comparison, but yet a chair that only you loved.

I had such a chair before Cindy and I married, I actually moved into an apartment with this being the only chair I owned, this chair was so valuable to me, it was well worth the thousands I had paid for it, well actually it was a rescue chair that someone was tossing because of the color.

Being the kind hearted man I am, I saved it from becoming a street chair, I gave it a home and never looked down on it because of it’s color, I am not really sure what color you would call it, somewhere between a faded maroon and orange, the fabric was worn to the point that the original color was never discovered, I did love that chair.

By the time I moved in with Cindy, we both had housefuls of furniture, the weekend of my move was spent mostly on the lawn discussing which furniture we were keeping, and explaining to passersby that we were not having a yard sale, I think she secretly passed our number to a few people in case they wanted a cheap recliner.

The recliner was doomed had Cindy gotten her way, I stood my ground and the only piece of furniture that matched nothing but myself was allowed to stay. I proudly moved my orange recliner into the house, it was positioned next to the couch with the giant orange flowers that Cindy already had, and yes the oranges did clash.

A few years later after a few minor repairs for the recliner, and a few couch covers for Cindy’s couch we were living in harmony, I would come home from work and rest in my chair, Cindy would mention that the chair needed to be replaced, a subject I had no desire to discuss, I told her it was a one of a kind and could never be replaced.

I have to admit it did resemble Martin Cranes recliner on Frasier, and one day while driving down the street in my company truck, I ended up behind a City sanitation truck with assorted furniture pieces, appliances, and other large items they had picked up during the day, atop the heap was a recliner that looked just like mine.

I laughed to myself thinking maybe my orange chair wasn’t a one of a kind since I had just seen its twin, I knew Cindy would get a laugh out of this.

When I pulled into the drive that evening she was standing on the porch smiling, she was so excited, she rushed me into the house to show me the new recliner she had gotten for me, it matched everything in the room even the cover on her couch.

I asked what she had done with my orange chair, she had given it to a family that needed furniture, and so in her opinion it had gone to a good home, looking back now I should have stopped that sanitation truck.

I asked her this very morning what she had done with my chair back then, it has been a few years and she could tell me the truth now, she just grinned and said “What chair, I have no idea what you are talking about”

I’d like to think that maybe it did go to a good home, it could have been discovered by the producers of Frasier, you never know with a little makeup and the right duct tape, that could have been my chair, it was actually one of a kind.

  1. I'm short and there is rarely a piece of furniture that fits me. I DO have a chair that works for me. It looks awful, but I have no plans to get rid of it and would fight anyone that made the suggestion.

    1. Funny how we all have a favorite chair, no matter how ratty it looks it is still the one we go to, I'd take my old orange recliner right back today as I have never had another that I liked as well.

  2. Wonderful post. As I type this I'm in my basement office, seated in a chair I've had for twenty years. It looks like hell, but on better days it looked looked like the chair on the bridge of the Enterprise, the one beneath Captain Kirk's butt. It's taped in many places but I'll never forget the day I found it abandoned in a downtown alley. Mrs. Chatterbox gives my beloved chair the stink-eye when she sees it.

    1. Hey Stephen, Thank You Sir, it seems our wives sometimes just don't understand the whole comfort thing in spite of the looks of the chair, you better keep an eye on Mrs. Chatterbox because if she is anything like Cindy, she just may sneak a new chair in on you when you least expect it :^)

Jimmy that cracked me up because I could SO see you thinking that!!

And yes, I do have a chair (my computer chair) that is so perfectly comfy it forms to my body. The only problem is that it's getting REALLY tattered-looking and worn out, but I don't dare throw it away because I'll have to break in a new one :(

    Great ending, buddy!

    1. If you are anything like us, some of the downsizing will include keeping a few things that should have gone :^)

  5. Jimmy, as you know, there are people in this world who just don't understand about chairs... my hubby included. Sorry about your chair but the story did give me a smile.

    1. You are so right, I smile too because I know that was my chair on the truck, Cindy just doesn't realize I know Ha Ha

  6. I love my favorite and very stained chair. It is loved deeply. I get really irritated if someone is in MY chair. A chair twin? Hmmmm. Guess we will never know. :-)

    1. Isn't it amazing how attached we get to the old chairs like this, I should have known that there couldn't be a chair twin, I have a feeling we know already.

  7. We have a lazy boy recliner that was the first chair we bought together. I think in 1988. Damn thing is just too comfy to get rid of!

    1. Bijoux, If you have had it since 88 it would be a shame to break in a new one now, I bet the fit is perfect now :^)

  8. Oh yeah! I understand totally. Right now I'm sitting in a recliner that must be at least 20 years old. It's not even a good one and was very cheap. You know what, I love that chair. It fits me perfectly. When I sit down, it feels like it was made for me. Everybody else who sits in it says it's uncomfortable. I usually reply with something like, "Okay, that's good to hear, now get out of my chair!"

    1. Hey Pat, That pretty much describes the one I had, it wasn't a top quality chair but man oh man was it comfortable.
