Bad Haircuts

They say the difference between a good and bad haircut is about two weeks, I swear there have been some for me that lasted longer than that.

My first haircut came when I was six weeks old, evidently my hair stood straight up all over and when combed down folks thought I was a girl, being the first born my Mom of course wanted everyone to get it right when they saw me, or else she got tired of the conversation when someone said;

"Oh what a cute little girl you have there",

"Thank you but, He is a boy, this is my son"

"Looks like a girl, just look at that hair, ain't she cute"

The majority of my early years I wore a crew cut, you know the style as close to having your head shaved without shaving it, drying my hair after getting out of the tub consisted of running the towel across my head, no fuss no muss.

Later on about the time I was moving up to Jr. High school, I was allowed to grow my hair out somewhat, this was good until our step dad took my brother and I down to the barbershop, he laid his fingers on the back of my brothers neck, using finger widths as a unit of measure "three fingers above the collar" then moved to the side "one finger above the ears" then around to the front "and two fingers above the eyebrows"

I wanted to laugh when the barber turned my brother around, his hair was jet black and this haircut looked like a butchered version of Moe Howards hairstyle from The Three Stooges, my desire to laugh quickly faded when the step dad said "looks good, cut his the same"

Two weeks would have been nice but these haircuts stuck with us through my freshman year of High school, at that time I could grow it out because I was now paying the barber, but I had to remember that the Bible says men shouldn't wear long hair, I was happy to remember that, but I was ecstatic to not have the finger width measurements anymore.

When Cindy and I married, she had a grey and white poodle, Blossom was a cool little dog, she loved having her hair trimmed, when Cindy would bring her home from a trip to the groomers, she ran to all the neighbors houses so they could all ooh and ahh over her and tell her how nice she looked.

Once we were short on money and Blossom really needed a trim, Cindy decided she could do as good as the groomer, when Cindy was finished poor old Blossom wouldn't even go outside, she wouldn't visit anyone, the kids laughed at her, and I really felt bad because I knew it would be more than two weeks before she had enough hair for the groomer to fix.

Ever since then whenever it is suggested that we could save money if Cindy would cut my hair, we sum it up with two words "Remember Blossom"

She and I did double team another dog we had, Dutchess stood patiently while we trimmed, we thought she looked pretty good until the neighbor girl came over with a set of electric shears and said, "here let me take care of Dutchess before you do any more damage"

Dutchess wagged her tail while Falon gave her the dogs version of a crew cut, it was a big change in her looks, and being the middle of summer she loved it, we gave the promise to "never do that again"

A few weeks ago while Cindy and I were brushing out Flash, her Dads horse, he asked Cindy to trim up Flashes tail and mane, with that said she retrieved scissors from the house and went to work on the trimming while I brushed....
Kind of reminds you of Moe doesn't he?

Have you had any bad haircuts or hairstyles?

  2. My first thought on the horse was indeed Mo.

I am very thin on top and got tired of the bald jokes, so (at the request of Mrs. C) i let everything grow and now people make fun of my pony tail.

    Frig them all!

Once a lady friend asked "When are you going to cut that thing?" I asked her if I cut it, would she sleep with me? She said, "Certainly not!" I told her, "Neither would my wife, so I'm keeping it."

    1. Hey Joe, I can relate to what you are saying, it is so funny that they will say things like "why don't you let your hair grow?" then you do and it's "when you going to get a haircut" ha ha, same thing as your pony tail as long as you and Mrs. C are happy then everyone else should be also.

I wish I had seen the look on your friends face when you asked her that, bet she never asked again ha ha.

  3. I got a good laugh out of your Blossom stories. We used to have poodles too. They do love their haircuts and can tell when they look good. You don't want to give a poodle a bad one or they will hide.

    Poor Flash!

We could all tell stories until the cows come home about bad haircuts. Great topic.

    1. Thank you Jean, I know Blossom was sure funny about her hair cuts, one friend that always made a big deal over her made the mistake of saying "Blossom you look like a Harlot" when she came in with her nails painted red, Blossom would never have anything to do with this friend after that.

  4. I once got a haircut that made me look like I was wearing one of Frank Sinatra's hair pieces. I was extremely happy when it grew out.

    1. Hey Stephen, it sure seems like a long two weeks when we have a haircut like that too.

  5. Whoa! Flash does look like Moe! That is funny, Jimmy.

I am veeeeery picky about my hair. Been going to the same hairdresser for 26 years. I'm going to be in trouble when she retires.

    1. Hi Bijoux, yes that was the first thing I thought when I saw his bangs ha ha.

Maybe you should get your hairdresser to start training someone before she decides to retire, have her practice on someone else though.

  6. As I started Junior High, my mom got rid of my pigtails and gave me a Buster Brown haircut. I hated it when everyone wanted to know where my dog Tige was? I know, before your time but trust me, not fun.
I did that to my horse once. Took forever to grow out.

    1. Hey Patti, I remember Buster Brown and can imagine how mad you were when the kids asked about Tige, I bet that was a hairstyle you were happy to see go.

Flash is starting to look better now, it is not so noticeable with his fly mask on ha ha.

  9. I don't remember this, but my mum once told me I had a short boy's style cut at age five, after trying to cut myself a fringe(bangs) like the other girls in school had. Mum hated fringes (bangs) and would never allow them, so I got the scissors and started hacking away clumps of hair.
My older son also looked a bit like a girl at birth, so I dressed him in blue with a bib around his neck announcing "I am a BOY", yet people would still say "oh isn't SHE just gorgeous" purely because of the long dark eyelashes I suppose.
Just read fishducky's comment and totally agree. I had my long ponytailed hair cut short three weeks ago and it looked great until I got home and washed it to get all the tiny "snip" bits off me.

  10. P.S. what's this about the bible saying men shouldn't wear long hair?

    1. This is something my step dad often, he actually had a couple of verses he would show us.

1 Corinthians 11:14 & 15 "11.14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him 11.15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering."

I'm like you I always remember that Jesus wore long hair though, so this confused me.

  11. River beat me to it, I was going to ask the same question about men not having long hair. I used to threaten my son with a 'basin' cut if he played up but never kept to it.

    1. Good morning Valerie, the step dad always preached 1 Corinthians 11:14 & 15, I know there is a lot more to the Bible than this but it was his favorite verse.

Oh yes the basin or bowl cut, I remember those ha ha.

  12. In the Old Testament yes men were meant to have their hair short and women long to be able to tell them apart. Oh how times have changed.

I have my hair cut every 3 weeks, and it rarely looks the way I want it to.

    1. Hi Joey, yes times have sure changed and continue to do so.

I use the same person every time I get mine cut and like you it rarely looks the same, my answer to that is I wear a cap.

  13. This was a cute read and great photo. I had long hair and remember getting a shorter version and a perm when my son was about 17 months old. He took one look at me and started screaming. The biggest shock to me was that he didn't recognize me and I was probably smelling of that stuff they use for perms. And then their was the poodle cut, not my dogs but mine. I've had some strange haircuts in my time :)

    1. Thank you Denise, I imagine the smell of the hair product was the biggest thing, but like you said the poodle cut could have done it also, I think everybody has experimented with different styles but don't we always drift back to our original one.

  14. I admit, I thought Flash looked like Moe before you even asked!

I currently have a haircut that I'm hoping gets better at the 2-week mark. I should know in a couple more days. It's not necessarily a "bad" cut, just not the one I asked for...

    1. Hi Abby, don't you hate it when that happens, Cindy once pointed to a picture on the wall and asked her stylist if she could cut hers like that, she said sure and end result was the stylist was looking at a different picture.

Hopefully the two week mark will be good for you and the next visit you get the one you want.

Poor flash, he does look like Moe.

I refuse to pay for a haircut, so my when it gets so bushy that I can't stand it anymore, my wife does it. She's no pro, but does a pretty good job (usually). Like you said, in about two weeks it looks just fine...

    1. Hey Pat, his hair is beginning to look much better now, we are past the two week point ha ha

I'd probably do just as well to let Cindy cut mine, two weeks comes quicker now, and I do wear a hat most of the time anyways.
