Lost In The Dark

I had to laugh at my little sister when she lost her car at the hospital, she had taken our Mom in to be admitted and stayed with her until visiting hours were over, kissed her goodnight and made her way to the parking lot.

She was completely lost when she walked out the rear door, “Do you know how confusing the parking lot at a hospital is after dark?” and, “Do you realize what kind of people hang out in the dark parking lots at a hospital?”

I’ll have to admit that the people hanging out in the parking lot were most likely, Doctors and Nurses on their smoke breaks, I know this is a no no but I do know a couple of each who still do this, yes I am talking about you.

Melinda is walking from lot to lot looking for her car, she is pushing the button listening for the familiar horn sound to point her way, she hears nothing but she presses on, she even went into the parking structure for some reason, just to listen for the horn.

After near panic and the help of a security guard, who either felt sympathetic or wanted to have her committed actually helped in the search, lost in the parking lot and still no horn sounded even when he pushed the button.

Melinda went back inside and phoned her husband, “Hey Robbie, I can’t find my car”, Robbie told her that everything was OK he knew where her car was, fuming she said “This is not funny, I really can’t find my car”, “Melinda relax it’s right where you left it, out in the driveway”

Melinda hung up without saying goodbye and walked back to the parking lot, passing by the security guard with a wave and this time grabbing the keys to Moms car out of her pocketbook, she drove away without having to search this time.

My laughter came the next day while she was relaying this tale to me on her way back to the hospital, “It’s not funny Jimmy” she said, Robbie is making fun of me, and you are laughing at me now.

I’m just glad to be back in my own car, at least when I leave the hospital I’ll be able to find it, I like the way my car drives it runs a lot smoother than Mommas.

Then all of a sudden I hear a loud “Damn” in my ear, What happened I asked, she is almost crying from laughing so hard, you better not tell anyone what I am about to say, OK I promise.

I am still driving Mommas car she said, I was laughing when she hung up without saying goodbye.

I didn’t tell anyone what happened, but I really don’t think typing counts.

Did you ever lose your car, not have it stolen, I mean really lose it only to find that it is right where you left it.

    1. I am hoping she laughs, but most likely if she doesn't I will laugh while she fusses at me Ha Ha

    1. Hi Betty, Yes Mom is doing good and I don't feel too bad about telling this story because she would definitely do the same for me Ha Ha

  3. Guilty. Just the other day I dropped my car off at the shop and drove my wIfe's car to the store. On the way out I looked for MY car for fifteen minutes before I remembered I hadn't driven to the store in my car.

    1. We have done that also Stephen, actually lost our new car in a parking lot because we were looking for the van we had driven for years :)

  4. Unfortunately, I HAVE lost my car and I didn't have the (legitimate) excuse that I was in someone else's.

Her going through all that on top of having to spend time at the hospital. Poor Melinda, she has my sympathies and please don't tell her I had to chuckle just a little bit... relieved it wasn't me.

    1. Hey Ms. A, I suppose this is why I can give her a hard time, I am afraid had the shoe been on the other foot I would have been searching too :)

  5. I hope Melinda doesn't curse you for publicising her dilemma. It's made everyone smile though, so tell her we're grateful :O) Yes, I lost my car once so I KNOW how she felt. I panicked at the time but learned a valuable lesson about noting exactly where I left it, mentally marking the position by a tree or a fence or some other permanent fixture. I even count the aisles in the supermarket car park so I know how far away the car is. In fact, you could say it's become an obsession...grins.

Hope your Mom recovers soon. Have a great weekend.

    1. Hi Valerie, Yes in an unfamiliar area you really have to pay attention to where you park, noting landmarks and counting aisles is a very good suggestion that we will remember.

Mom is doing well and a Great weekend to you also

  6. Yep....been there, done that at the airport. DFW is a HUGE airport with 4 remote parking lots. I forgot which of the 4 lots I parked in. Naturally I found it in the last of the 4 lots I searched. Figures. ;)

    1. I have flown into DFW several times, I had enough trouble getting from the gate they dropped me at and to the one I was supposed to be departing from, I can just imagine parking there.

  8. OMG...HILARIOUS, Jimmy!!!!!

Brings back SEVERAL memories for me of when I still had a car and drove. I can't tell you HOW MANY times I left the shopping mall; searching and searching for my car and not finding it. I would panic, thinking that someone STOLE it; only to find out that I had parked the darn car on the opposite side of the mall!

    HAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!

See, this is another reason why I'm glad I don't have a car anymore. It's just another thing for me to lose!

    Have a super Saturday, buddy!

    Hi to Cindy!

    1. Hey Ron, Isn't it strange how it seems your car has moved once you come out of a shopping mall, I think they have little gremlins in the parking lots that move the cars around, this is one of the reasons I hate going to the mall Ha Ha

A Great Saturday to you too Buddy

  9. Yes, it's happened to me at places I'm not familiar with, mostly parking garages. Each floor looks the same, as does every entrance or elevator. So frustrating!

    1. I am not familiar with a parking garage myself, but from what I can tell I'd be calling Melinda for help Ha Ha

  10. I've never lost my car as such, but I have caught the bus home from work, only to realise halfway there that I drove in that day.

  11. oh my! yes..I forget many times. My husband parks by a landmark, like a number pole, and he never forgets where he parks. he is sympathetic with me though for never remembering to do that.

    1. Hi Annmarie, Does he ever give you a hard time just in fun for this?

I think we all have done this at one time or another, and yes I do appreciate her for taking care of Mom, but as a big Brother it's still my job to rib her just a bit :)

  13. There may or may not have been an incident in a Walmart parking lot where I wandered up and down the rows of parked cars, wishing I had one of those cars that beep when you push the button on the key...

    But I'm not telling.

    1. The incident that may or may not have happened also occurred at Stater Brothers (Grocery store) Cindy was actually pressing on her Dads key which like yours has no buttons.

We can all get together and not tell those two incidents I suppose :^)

  14. My comment keeps getting eaten. UGH.

That is too funny. I am laughing and nodding. Yes, I have done that, but once our car was stolen. Oh man, NOT so funny then! I use that horn button thingie a lot to find my car.

    1. I can just imagine how frustrating the stolen car was, the horn button the keys is a lifesaver, makes finding the car easier taking into account you use the right keys Ha Ha

  15. That's too funny! - well, aside from the fact that it happened at a hospital for mom. But I can truly relate. Hopefully, the hospital isn't all that familiar a place and all of the parking lots look alike, especially after dark!

I don't often drive, preferring to bicycle. But sometimes I take one of our two cars for hauling groceries or such. I've often forgotten which one I drove, which makes for a real challenge finding the damn thing.

And, sorry to say, I think typing does count as "telling"!

    1. Isn't it funny how much a parking lot changes when the sun goes down, and when you forget which vehicle you are in just makes matters worse, it's bad enough in the daylight but after dark I imagine it is much worse.

I figured typing it out was just as bad but as a Big Brother there are some things you just have to do Ha Ha
