Girl Scouts Or Crime Fighters

What is this world coming to when someone swipes the cookie money from a Girl Scout?

I read in our newspaper a few days ago of an incident at a Stater Brothers grocery store, Girl Scout troop 1303 was packing up for the day after selling their allotted amount of cookies.

These girls had sold their entire supply and were getting ready to head home, the money bag containing about $450 was sitting on the table when a young man carrying a skateboard helped himself to it.

Picture this a dude running across a parking lot carrying a skateboard and a stolen money bag, right on his tail is a fourteen year old Girl Scout yelling “Stop Him, Stop Him He took our money”

She eventually tripped and fell down while two customers remained on his trail, the man got away with the money but store surveillance cameras gave the media a picture of him to post, which led to his arrest.

The newspaper article mentioned this is the second theft from area Girl Scouts in a month; money was also stolen from another troop selling cookies.

Here are a few mentions that I found of other such incidents just this year:

Two men are being held on charges they stole nearly $400 from a group of Girl Scouts selling cookies at a store in Massachusetts

Girl Scouts are robbed of cookie money in Texas

Tucson Police are investigating after two separate incidents of thieves stealing money from Girl Scouts selling cookies.

I think it’s pretty sad when thieves start targeting Girl Scouts, I know it looks like we are overpaying for a box of cookies but at least we are getting a quality product for our four and a half bucks, and the money is going to a good cause.

Victoria, the Girl Scout from Troop 1303 that gave chase to the thief had no major injuries, paramedics treated her for minor scrapes and bruises after her spill in the parking lot.

She said, “Why would he do that?” “I think that’s really stupid. He should earn it himself and accomplish something he should be proud of instead of feeling guilty.” She went on to say, “We can easily replace a box of cookies, but he took the money bag.”

The paper began their story with “Girl Scout cookie sales are meant to teach young women to be entrepreneurs - not crime fighters.”

With girls like Victoria standing up for themselves I think they are learning a whole lot more than how to be an entrepreneur, my hats off to Victoria and the rest of the girl scouts who spend their days asking you if you would like to buy a box of cookies.

I normally don’t like to mention names but in this case, Shame on you Colin Sawyer, 20, of Phelan, CA, I know you are going to do good in jail.

Just think of how well you will fit in when you answer your cellmate’s question “What are you in for kid?” Most decent criminals actually like Girl Scouts and cookies; I don’t think they are going to like you.

What is your favorite Girl Scout cookie?

    1. Hey Joe, That is my absolute favorite also.

    2. Was my favorite as well, although now I think it's called a "caramel Delight". We can no longer eat them, as I am gluten free and GS has yet to come up with a GF version of their cookies, but we always buy Thin Mints from my niece. I was a bit disappointed to find though that only 40 cents per box actually goes back to the troop.

    3. I am surprised they have not come out with a gluten free version as of yet, and I would have thought their profit margin was greater than that. Yes when they changed the name upset me briefly because I thought for a minute they had stopped selling my favorite.

  2. We like the Samoas best, too, but the last time we bought a box, they were only two bucks. Um, I guess it's been a while, huh?

    1. Hey Susan, Looks like it has been a while since you bought a box ;) just be prepared for the new name for Samoas which is now Carmel Delites, I do love these

  3. My daughter is in Girl Scouts and they had one of the assistant troop leaders walk off with a bunch of the cookie cash. It's bad enough when a stranger does it, but one of the mother's who was trusted was worse. Girl Scouts did nothing because they got their money, she took the troop's money.

And to answer your question - Thin Mints out of the freezer. I actually had some earlier this evening.

    1. Hey Jeff, Having one of their leaders rip them off is really low, like you said its bad enough when a stranger does it, but when someone you know and trust robs from you makes it much worse. My wife keeps a box of thin mints in the freezer for herself, those are her favorite.

  4. I don't know what it's like in the US but here punishment doesn't seem to fit the crime. Bring back the stocks, I say!!

    1. I agree Valerie, In most cases the punishment does not fit the crime, the stocks would be good for Girl Scout Cookie money thieves in my opinion.

  5. Thin Mints rule! The Keebler elf just doesn't make them as good.

I was a scout leader for many years, but the cookie mom had the hardest job.

    1. Hey Bijoux, I bet the Cookie Moms wish they had it easy as the Keebler elves, I was a Cub master for a Cub Scout pack but there were no cookies involved :)

    1. Hey Stephen, It appears that the Thin Mints are grabbing the vast majority of the votes :)

  7. Ever since MY daughter was in Girl Scouts, I thought it was a very stupid thing to do, sending young girls to knock on strange doors to sell cookies to people they don't know.

    The same goes for trick-or-treating.

I know the money is needed, but we also need the girl's to have another venue than "selling on the street".

And it's scum like Colin Sawyer that makes it dangerous.

    1. Selling in front of the stores would be safer I would think but like you said scum like Colin Sawyer does make it dangerous, too bad we are going to be forced to either stop cookie sales or arm the troop leaders.

    2. A thought just occurred to me: shouldn't training Girl Scouts in self-defense, karate, and the art of 'being aware of your surroundings' be a great part of earning a banner badge?

    3. I think this is an excellent idea, self defense and being aware of your surroundings is a must in my opinion, so why not train our kids, for the girls I think they should all have this banner badge.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaay! So glad to hear that, Jimmy!

"“Why would he do that?” “I think that’s really stupid. He should earn it himself and accomplish something he should be proud of instead of feeling guilty.”

    She is sooooooo right!

It's the same here, Jimmy, crime everywhere and getting more and more frequent daily.

My favorite Girl Scout cookies are the Thin Mints. Love em'!

    1. Hey Ron, It both scared me to death and made me proud when I read that the fourteen year old girl gave chase to the thief, I would have liked to read that she caught him and kicked the crap out of him, that would have been just.

It is scary how much the crime rate has risen, we sure have to be more careful no matter what we do.

Cindy and you both seem to like the most favorite cookie according to our answers here :)

  9. It takes a special kind of scum to rob Girl Scouts!

Samoas for me - or whatever they are called now.

  10. Living in the United Kingdom our range of biscuits/cookies might be different to those in the USA. My favorite: jammy-dodgers, as they remind me of my childhood.

    1. Hey Rachael, I don't think they recovered any money from him but the Girl Scouts made a statement that the troop would receive the amount lost from them, also one business in the area offered 20% of their proceeds from one day to them, gotta love it when people reach out.

  12. Hey Jimmy! I saw this story on the news and was shocked! The only better ending would have been if the all the girls caught up with him and pummeled him senseless. Today, my favorite is Samaoas. It used to be the Peanut Butter cookies. I think they call, or called them Dosi-Dos or something like that.

    1. I too was shocked by this story Pat, I would have loved to have seen those girls take him down, not from lack of trying from the one girl, glad she wasn't hurt.

The Samoas are my favorite too

  13. I gotta ask: what is a "decent" criminial? you said most decent criminals like girl scouts and cookies, lol. do you remember those old commercials about"boy, do we need scouts"? sounds like this young thief would have benefited from such a program, but maybe not.

    1. "sounds like this young thief would have benefited from such a program" Amen to that.

I suppose if I had to choose a criminal I'd at least want a decent one Ha Ha

  14. Thim Mints cookies are my fave. I like to keep 'em in the freezer and then eat them cold.

If I were dictator (which, for a number of obvious reasons, would not be a good thing overall) I'd make it a castrating offense to rob Girl Scouts. You've already proven your balls are worthless.

    1. Hey Jim, Castration sounds like a proper punishment for robbing Girl Scouts

  15. $4.50?

We're getting a deal in central Virginia at $3.75 a pop - up from $3.50 a couple years ago. But, like you said, it's a quality product, supporting a great cause, and they are delicious!

My fav is the Tagalongs (chocolate outer, peanut butter inner), with Thin Mints as a close second. The Trefoil (shortbread) ain't bad either; especially with vanilla ice cream.

As you can see, I'm a fan, and like you, I have no pity for Girl Scout Cookie thieves.

    1. Hi Anita, Yes $4.50 a box here, I suppose it all has to do with where you live, the cookies are still good :)

  17. Those criminals better watch out. My daughter was a Girl Scout and I've seen her take down a 6' tall dude before (she's a mere 5' tall but feisty).

    Thin mints all the way!!
