I Was Tricked

We all survived Thanksgiving with nothing more than a few gained pounds, and also pounds of turkey leftover for sandwiches; this is a good thing in my opinion because I do love a good leftover turkey sandwich.

Black Friday rolled around and I planned to hide out at the house and refuse to participate, unlike my wife who went out at 6pm Thanksgiving evening for a Black Friday sale, my question is how can you call it a Black Friday sale when it is actually Thursday night?

Just as we were settling down in the living room after our fabulous dinner, Cindy and some of her nieces came up with the idea of going to our local Wally World, “Come on Jimmy, you know it will be fun” she prodded, and after all my attempts to ignore the requests had failed I simply smiled and said “No thank you Darling, I think I’ll stay…..

I never finished my statement but I did feel a rush of wind as the girls rushed out the door, all the sale ads finally began to settle around the living room as the door slammed, just imagine how fifteen pounds of sale ads look floating in the air, Cindy’s Dad and I looked at each other and simultaneously said, somebody’s going to have to pick those up.

Somehow I think they were only asking us to join them to be nice, but when it comes to Black Friday I think it’s nice to stay home.

At almost 9:30pm the girls arrived back home, they had survived Wally World with only a few altercations, going into the video department looking for movies to give Benjamin for Christmas they were only allowing five customers at a time, Cindy didn’t think this was such a bad idea, until the associates began following them around and loudly saying, “Make your selections and move on”

Cindy just took her time and continued making selections to buy, the associate told her Mam you are going to have to hurry along, there are other customers, Cindy told her “I am buying movies for my Grandson, I will pick out five or six and then I will move along” well you really need to hurry, at this time Cindy placed approximately fifty movies into the basket and began to walk away, the associate told her that she needed to pay for her purchases there, Cindy said, “I don’t have time right now, I have more shopping to do, I have to hurry along”

After leaving the video department Cindy thumbed through the basket of movies, picked out five at one dollar and ninety seven cents each and left the basket, she went to the jewelry counter and picked up a set of earrings for one of the nieces, paid for her movies and left Wally World.

The next morning Cindy asked me to go with her to Walgreen’s Drugs to pick up prescriptions, I joined her and as we waited for the prescription to be filled we browsed the store, looking through the as seen on TV stuff, I mentioned an item that I thought would be a good gift idea, Cindy looked at me and laughed “Tricked you” she said, “Just look at you shopping on Black Friday”

There is only one thing I hate more than shopping on Black Friday, and that is getting tricked into it.

How do you feel about the Black Friday sales, and do you willingly participate?

  1. I don't like shopping on any day, much less on a day that is guaranteed to be crowded. I did not participate.

    1. I love people but not that many all in one place :) shopping days like this do not impress me either needless to say.

  2. You technically weren't shopping on Black Friday; more like getting a prescription and spending time with your wife :) I only have a handful of people to buy for and most enjoy gift cards so I enjoy the opportunity to stay out of the stores as much as possible :) I'm also lucky; I usually work the day after Thanksgiving; perfect excuse not to end up at the mall.

  3. Cindy is a very brave lady... and a calm one. I would have been in a right state with someone on my heels all the time telling me to hurry up. We had our first Black Friday... I stayed home. There were riots and all sorts so I was more than happy to miss it.

    1. Hi Valerie, I don't like being rushed either, for me it's best if I just stay away from situations like this.

If there were riots and such with your first Black Friday it was a good thing you missed it.

  4. "Cindy said, “I don’t have time right now, I have more shopping to do, I have to hurry along”

    HAHAHAHA! I love Cindy!!!!

Being someone who is in retail, I can tell you that if I wasn't in retail, I wouldn't be anywhere near a store on Black Friday. What I think is atrocious is that retailers have now pushed Black Friday sales back to Thanksgiving Day so that people can shop ON Thanksgiving Day. Luckily for me, the store I work in didn't open on Thursday.

    1. Hey Ron, I agree with you in that absolutely no one should be working on Thanksgiving, and it is a shame that a lot are opening on Thanksgiving evening now.

    1. and i feel terrible for the poor store employees who had to work thursday night for all those crazy shopping people.

    2. I just imagine the majority of the employees didn't want to be there anyway, thus making the situation only worse with the mobs they were dealing with.

  6. I did not participate. I only have one Christmas present to buy and I've already bought it. All of the other gifts I'll be giving are homemade. Gee, don't I sound like Martha Stewart?

    1. Hey Stephen, It does sound like you may be having a Martha Stewart moment :) seriously I don't see a problem with homemade gifts as they are more personal, and to me that is what giving is all about.

  7. Only did it once three years ago, my wife and I were delusional enough to think we could buy a new refrigerator, our old one was literally days away from breaking down. Plus, there was this strange growth at the bottom that I believe was evolving into an intelligent life form, it scared me.

Anyway, we joined the line at Best Buy around 9:00pm Thursday night and actually had a good time hanging out and talking with other people. Once the doors opened at Midnight all hell broke loose with the salespeople expertly managing the customers. Truth be told the one thing I got out of the entire episode is that I lost a lot of faith in my fellow human beings.

    1. I think the growth at the bottom of the old frig would have behaved better.

    2. Yes Sir it seems any manners or respect is thrown out the window when people get into these situations, yep the growth would be more tolerable.

  8. Black Friday? I went for a walk, donated blood, ate delicious leftovers, and watched "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles." It was a perfect day.

  11. As some others already said, I think it's a crime that so many people are required to work so many hours this time of year.

I have a self imposed rule pertaining to Christmas gift shopping. If it hasn't been bought BEFORE Thanksgiving, it isn't going to be bought by me, or with me present. I relaxed the rule many years ago. It used to be BEFORE Halloween. I guess you can tell that I don't like shopping very much this time of year.

    1. I too think it's a crime for anyone to work on a holiday, especially one like Thanksgiving or Christmas, I like your rule because there are way too many people out there crowding the stores, at least you have figured a way to keep yourself out of the mix, I'm getting close ;)
