Accidental Backspace

I read a post a couple of days ago called 'Tis the Season written by our good friend Susan over at I Think; Therefore, I Yam that got me to thinking about our homeless population.

I sat and wrote down my thoughts, then we had lunch and I did my "wifely duties" as Cindy likes to call my chores, later on I sat back down and edited some of my wording and did a little research on numbers of homeless people in different cities and counties, I came up with a rather shocking list, but I wanted to share some of these numbers with you.

I went back to my blog and answered your comments on Don't diss the grits and then read and commented on some of your blogs. early the next morning I went back to the post I was writing for you. I write most of my posts on a notepad that I have on my Kindle, simply because it's easy and it doesn't mess with the formatting when I copy and paste it to my blog.

I answered the new comments on my blog and then had breakfast with Cindy, after breakfast I added some more to the post and then went back and took out all of the irrelevant thoughts I had added. I double checked the numbers and added a closing statement.

This is when I read it a couple of times to make sure it sounded right, all I need to do now it to copy and paste it to my blog, so I went through and deleted everything I wasn't going to use, copy and delete, now all the extra words are gone, copy and delete, now all of my research notes are gone. I read it once again and really liked what I had written.

Select all and copy is all I had to do and then paste it onto my blog...Easy enough right? I selected all and noticed the cursor was about four lines below the ending, so rather than drag the cursor back up to the end, I mistakenly hit Backspace...Noooooooo!

That is when I decided to write this post while I start over on the other one, the other one I liked so well is Gone, sorry folks but I'll do better next time.

I mistakenly told Cindy what I had done and she had the nerve to laugh, she tells me that she doesn't think it's funny but that little grin for no reason and when she breaks into a little giggle when I mention it tells me different.

Have you ever lost an entire post with a simple mistake like this?

  1. I don't think I have, but I remember in school back before computers were really good, freaking out about losing an essay over some computer error. I still remember bringing floppy disks to transfer them over. It's been awhile since computers have been made to accept those horrid low-memory things.

  2. When I screw up on the computer, I hit "contrl Z" and it undo's the last keystroke.

I have forgotten to save something and accidentally closed it so I can feel your pain.

    1. Thanks Joe, I'll have to remember "control Z" sounds like a lifesaver.

    2. It doesn't help if you backspaced and deleted a highlighted section or post, nor if you accidentally close without saving. Didn't work for me anyway.

    3. That is exactly what I did, it appears an "undo backspace" would be a good option to have.

  3. We've all done this more than we would like to admit. It's a horrible feeling. I just close out the piece and when it asked if I want to save it I say no.

I linked this post to Silly Sunday. Yes, it's that funny. ☺

  4. I haven't lost an entire post like that but I have lost whole paragraphs that I had to rebuild from memory. It's a horrible feeling when you work so hard to write something, then lose it. I do that more often with comments on other people's blogs than on my own because I usually write mine in Word then copy and paste over to Bloggers.

I look forward to your post on the homeless. I've written about that topic a few times. Winter always has me thinking about them and how lucky I am not to be homeless and fighting the cold and snow so up close and personal.

I just got a Kindle Fire and am interested in what notepad app you are using. OneNote came pre-loaded but I haven't tried it or any other app for writing yet.

    1. The app I have been using is InkPad Note Pad, it was a free download and after I got accustomed to it I have had no trouble until now, and this wasn't the app's fault, I just got ahead of myself.

I have used this little trick more times than I can count and was delighted each and every time. Thanks again Joeh and Jimmy my commiserations on your problems.

  7. YES! I had the whole thing in Blogger, and it was saved, or so I thought. Then I switched to my other account, and when I came back and opened up that masterpiece that only needed a photo added...IT WAS BLANK! I panicked. I left the post open, and started searching Google for solutions.

The solution was to hit the UNDO symbol about 15 times. I'd already tried it, with it just going back to a blank screen. But when I persisted, I got my masterpiece back. Something must have gone all wonky with Blogger that night. I have a good mind to stop paying for it! Oh, wait...

  9. I feel for you. I/we have been battling computer woes over the last few days. And the air has turned blue.
I have now/mostly/hopefully repaired the damage.
My heart goes out to the homeless - and they got a nod in my Sunday Selections post. There are too many of them. World-wide.
And there but for the grace of god go all of us.

I can't believe the number of homeless people we have everywhere, it is so sad to think of them sleeping out in the weather, I pray for them everyday, I like what you did by donating the filled handbags for the women in your community and also your concern for the men also.

  11. I notice people have already talked about CTRL+Z and undo - I just thought I'd point out where the undo button is on the Blogger page, in case others aren't sure; it's at the top left of the page where you do to write a post - right beside the "Compose" and "HTML" buttons. It's an arrow that shows "undo" if you hover over it with the mouse. And in case you "undo" something and then decide you want it back, the arrow next to that is the "redo" button.

I've never lost a post yet. But it's early times for me :) I truly sympathize with your situation - all that work and fact-checking and editing . . . gone in a nanosecond . . . gah.

  12. I have lost post and comments. Usually the “reverse arrow”button will bring it back but not always. it gets me so aggrevivated I cant do a “do over”.
Writing it somewhere else then copy and paste to blogger sounds like a good idea.
I blog from my iPad and blogger no longer has an app for iPad. So I use “blog pro”. I keep my post in drafts until they are edited and even then I’m always finding typos after I publish to blogger. Im not a bad speller, im just careless.

  14. I hope you take the time to write the post again about the homeless. Its a passion of mine to help as much as possible. I would welcome reading your thoughts (however they come together) about the situation. I'm so technology challenged that I had never hooked up a computer but found myself having to do so the other day since my work computer went out and the new one delivered came during my work day (I got paid for the down time when my computer wasn't working). I had to hook up the new one to get up and running during my assigned shift. Hubby had me unhook the old one, he marked where each cable went with a sticky note attached to take and I was good to go when I rehooked it up. Other than that, I'm still not very savvy.

I haven't per se did what you did, but one year for the A/Z challenge I pre wrote all my posts. About a week before the challenge something terrible happened that I felt I couldn't participate in the challenge. I deleted all the posts I wrote. Some were really good ones too and I never tried to reconstruct them.

    1. I will post one on the homeless tomorrow, I believe that I have it ready now but want to look it over once more.

It's hard to re write a post once you have deleted it, I can't imagine writing as many posts as you did ahead of time, much less trying to re do them once you deleted them, I know that you had a lot of good material there, maybe one day you will decide to rework some of them.

Working on a computer is both fairly easy and complicated at the same time, congratulations on getting yours up and running, sometimes it takes a little teamwork and it looks like your husband was a great teammate.

  15. Have I ever? yes I have. Twice. Now I type everything and copy/paste to wordpad on my computer and save it. Then if anything goes wrong and a post is lost I have it somewhere in my documents to start over with.

    1. That is the same thing I do also River, my mistake was when I copied the document instead of hitting copy I clicked the backspace button and deleted everything...nothing I did brought it back, it should have gone back to the last save but instead vanished.

  16. YES, JUST THE OTHER WEEK.... Like you I write drafts first then put them in Google in date order. That's when I delete from my draft page on the laptop. After that I remembered something I should have included, went into Google and clicked on THE WRONG BUTTON. Suddenly the whole post disappeared. Forever. Comments and all! I feel your pain, Jimmy, but it's a relief someone else has had the same experience.
