Covered in chocolate

Don't you just love Chocolate covered cherries? I have a special relationship with chocolate covered cherries myself. It has become a habit, a habit that I continue to  repeat over and over and probably will continue repeating for quite some time. I can't stop myself, I just have to do it, once I started I simply cannot stop...Now before you consider a covered with chocolate intervention for me, allow me to explain.

I have bought a box of chocolate covered cherries for my mom every Christmas that I can recall, I can't remember one that I didn't get a box for her, well ever since I was old enough to buy gifts that is.

When I left South Carolina and moved to New Mexico I started mailing a box wrapped up as a gift to her every year, just a cheap box that you can buy anywhere, nothing fancy and she always loved them. She said that the grandkids were always happy when she opened the box, because she always shared the chocolate covered cherries with them, needless to say the box didn't last long, so I started sending two boxes, one for her to share and one for herself.

Since Cindy and I are now living in California the tradition continues, the only difference is that a few years back, rather than buy the cheap box of chocolate covered cherries we invested in a pound of assorted milk and dark chocolate covered cherries from See' Candies.

A box of See's Candy wrapped in red Christmas wrapping.
Mom's box of chocolate covered cherries from See's Candies
For a brief history on See's Candies, A Canadian chocolate salesman named Charles See opened a shop in Los Angeles California in 1921, where his mom Mary See made and sold her own chocolate and candy recipes, a successful business bloomed and is still going strong today.

Being raised in South Carolina I knew nothing about See's Candies, but with my Cindy being raised in California, she knew all about them, she talked me into taking her there to get candies for herself.

When you go to See's Candies the first thing they do is offer you a candy sample as you walk through the front doors, Man that candy is good! As you figured it's a little pricey but as they say "it only costs a little more to go first class."

"Can I have a chocolate covered cherry for my husband to sample?" Cindy asked the clerk behind the glass candy case. And after tasting that sample I have never bought another box of .98 cent chocolate covered cherries for my mom, the price has jumped up enough now that one box costs what a quarter of a centuries worth of the cheap cherries would have cost, but that is OK, it's worth it.

As a matter of fact the tasting of that sample is when Mom's first pound of cherries were bought, and of course a box of assorted dark chocolate nuts for Cindy.

After that first See's Candy Christmas for my mom I was talking with her on the phone. "What did you think of that candy Mom?" I asked. "That's some really good candy" she replied. "What did the grand kids think?" "They don't know anything about it" she said. "Really, did you eat it all already?" I asked. "No, I only ate two pieces and then I hid it in my closet, I'm going to make this candy last...it's too good to share."

So now we have a new tradition for mom, no more cheap cherries, but rather a pound of assorted milk and dark chocolate covered cherries from See's that she enjoys for as long as she can make them last from their spot safely hidden in her closet.

Do you have a tradition that you repeat every year? And what is your favorite candy?

  2. Jimmy that is a sweet tradition (no pun intended) (Okay, maybe a little). When I was young my grandad always gave me a box of chocolates for Christmas regardless of what Gram had already wrapped up. Christmas seems to change for us every year now depending on circumstances but I have the memories of lots of traditions that were carried on for years in our family.

    1. Delores that is a nice memory to have of your grandad, that box of chocolates from him was special I know. Christmas does seem to change over the years, a big difference from when we were kids but deep down those memories are always there.

  3. Once you've had the good stuff, it's tough to go back to cheapo. Nice tradition. I'm glad your mom rations it all for herself!

    1. Oh yes Abby, the cheap stuff is OK but the good stuff is so much better, I know mom is itching to open up her box now...if she hasn't already ha ha.

  4. We have a common experience with buying our mother's chocolate covered cherries for Christmas. We also have a candy shop nearby that makes their own candy...very expensive but so good you don't want the cheap stuff anymore. They have the cutest little boxes that only hold one piece. I love those boxes! You should google the recipe for chocolate cordial tarts, they are better than the candies and so easy to make for parties.

    1. Jean I have noticed that we have a lot of similarities in our lives, from Snoopy to chocolate covered cherries I think it's really neat.

I'll have to google that recipe, chocolate cordial tarts sounds like something I would like also.

  6. My mother loved chocolate covered cherries. It was her favorite. See's is a great choice for quality candy. I love the dark chocolate nougat from See's. That's my favorite.

    Have a fabulous day. ☺

  8. Quality is worth paying a little extra for isn't it?
Christmas is about tradition I think. The ones we remember, the ones we observe, the ones we create...

  10. I dont have a tradition. I do something different every year it seems. However, My mom makes the best fruit cakes every year!
I bought some chocolate covered cherries filled with brandy once. Oh my goodness.
For the record, I do not like the cream filled ones. I like the liquid filled ones.

  11. I am weak for two seasonal candies. Those addictive chocolate covered cherries--have only had the cheap ones, and Cadbury Easter eggs. I have more restraint on the eggs. And yes, like joeh--I do love fruitcakes and get one each year. I'm just grateful these things aren't available year round. Hopefully I won't run across See's.

  14. My dad used to buy me a box of chocolates for many years. Moirs and Ganong are both local chocolatiers, and now we have a Syrian family locally who made chocolates in their home country until their plant was destroyed in the bombing. They have started a business near here and their chocolates are excellent. It's nice to have something just a cut above the Walmart stuff for special occasions and special people. I hope you get your special chocolates and your fruitcake! (another fruitcake fan here)

    1. It's nice to see someone like the Syrian family who have had to completely start over start a business and succeed, the fact that their chocolate is a cut above will definitely keep them in business.

The chocolates from your Dad I know were perfect no matter where they were from, the memories attached are priceless.

  15. Mmm...See's Candies! Good for you, sending your mom the quality stuff. And good for Cindy, for showing you where to get it, even if she DID benefit by getting some See's of her own.

I've never seen so many fruitcake lovers gathered in one place! I, too, love fruitcake. My best ol' ex-teaching buddy Mabel got me one for Christmas a few years ago, from the Trappist monks of Assumption Abbey near Ava in southwest Missouri. Here's a video of them making the fruitcakes. Don't watch if you're squeamish about seeing how the magic happens! This was the most delicious fruitcake I ever tasted. And I tasted it a lot, because nobody else in my house likes fruitcake.

  16. Funny, I just finished a piece of See's Candy from the 2 pound box my brother/family sent to us for Christmas! Growing up, I loved their caramel lollipops. I never tried one of their chocolate covered cherries, but thinking I must do so soon based on your mom's review of them. We always got cheap chocolate covered cherries here.

We kind of got out of traditions after the kids grew up and moved out/on. We were just talking the other day we need to establish new traditions for us.

My favorite candy has always been chocolate, but the older I get the less I seem to eat of it.

  17. My mother-in-law always asks for chocolate covered cherries for Christmas. I'm not a massive fan of chocolate so I don't think I've ever eaten one! I like traditional sweets like Cough Candy, but I'm trying to lose some weight so I've been candy free for 2 months!

    1. If you are not a fan of chocolates then I am not sure that chocolate covered cherries would impress you. Traditional sweets and the holiday candies I enjoy seeing especially at Christmas time, but those old favorites are that common anymore, your cough candy would fit right in. 2 months candy free is a terrific start on your weight loss goal.

  18. No tradition here anymore, but for years I bought my dad a box of dark chocolate covered liqueur cherries each Christmas until the company didn't make them anymore. They got bought out by a different company. There were higher priced boxes available, but dad said they didn't taste as good. I really think he just said that because he knew I couldn't afford them.

    1. Your Dad most likely did tell you they didn't taste as well to help you spend less on his chocolate covered cherries, Parents will do things like that, unless he really did like the cheaper ones better, only your Dad knows the answer for that one.

  19. I could never resist chocolate but it was rationed when I was old enough to be trusted to eat it without wearing a bib! Those ration book coupons just didn't go far enough for a chocolate fanatic.
I adore chocolate but ... there's always a 'but' isn't there ... it has recently been suspected of causing all that problem I had with the internals. You may weep with me if you want to.

  20. I'm not fan of chocolate covered cherries or strawberries, and surely must be in the minority. (lol) I'm glad you've fallen in love with them, and it's a become a family tradition. I used to enter sweepstakes a lot back in 2000's, while I was living in Virginia Beach, and I entered one to win a year's worth of candy. I had never heard of this candy company before, but I still went for it. I received an email one day that told me I was the lucky winner of a year of See's candy! (lol) Happy Friday to you and Cindy! Hugs...RO

  24. I always joke that when it comes to Christmas gifts, I'm all about the three C's: chocolate, coffee, camera stuff. Needless to say, I get a lot of chocolate and coffee. :-)

We have a tradition here that our youngest son gets one gift inside the same gift box every year (it originally held a tie, or something like that). It is a nice, sturdy, little box and we just keep re-using it. This year, it will hold a wallet.
