Have You Seen My Glasses

How many of you wear glasses and just how careful are you with them? My good friend Pat Tillett had a post a couple days ago called New Glasses, that got me thinking about just how much luck I have had with my very own glasses, buying them in bulk at Costco just may be an option for me, Thanks Pat.

My very first pair of glasses were prescribed back when I was in Junior High school, the teacher decided that I was not comprehending anything that she wrote on the blackboard so down to the school nurse I was sent, after her vast knowledge about eye exams she diagnosed that I needed reading glasses, and relayed her suggestion to an actual eye doctor who prescribed reading glasses for me, have any of you picked up on the problem yet?

Here I am thinking that I would look really cool in a nice pair of wire rimmed glasses which were popular at the time, but Moms budget only afforded the thick plastic frames that only came in black or gray, I chose gray and went back to school only to hear laughter from everyone around when I put them on my face and squinted to see the blackboard, this didn’t work and neither did looking at my books, I still to this day take my glasses off to read as I am still as nearsighted as I was back then, the problem I mentioned is reading glasses don’t help at a distance.

My first son was born before I ever admitted that I really couldn’t see at a distance, I went to a real eye doctor and got me a fine pair of wire rimmed glasses and the whole world around me looked like someone had turned the lights on, taking my glasses off to read once while on vacation, I ended up breaking the frame in half, and guess what, yep you guessed right, the only rims that could be found to fit my lenses were a thick plastic frame that only came in black or gray, I chose gray.

While helping Randy do an oil change on his truck, I pulled the dipstick to check the level, I laid my glasses on the air cleaner and went over all the normal checks and closed the hood, walked into the house and thought to myself “wonder where my glasses are”, yes they were still on the air cleaner and now I knew why I had to slam the hood numerous times to get it to shut properly, my completely flattened glasses were lying there with the lenses popped out.

Now I am not getting another set of plastic frames so I went down and got myself fitted for contacts, this worked well until I missed my photo gray lenses and had to get myself a pair of cheap sunglasses, you know the ones with the thick black frames, and yes I broke several pairs of those too.
Now I am back into my regular glasses, the progressive bifocals even, and yes they are black wire rimmed, a couple months ago I was adjusting the wheels on my lawnmower, I was sitting on the floor of my shop and laid my glasses to the side where they would be out of harms way, I got up and went into the house for a coffee refill and thought to myself “wonder where my glasses are”, yes you guessed it, there they were lying next to the lawnmower looking like a crushed spider.

Buying glasses in bulk is looking pretty good to me now.

  3. I totally feel your pain Jimmy! People who don't wear glasses don't understand what a hassle they are. You've certainly had more than your share! I first got mine in sixth grade. I broke them or lost them so many times that my mom quit buying them for me.
Great story! (thanks for the plug)

  4. I got my first pair in 5th grade. I wore the old fashioned hard contact lenses in the 1980's, but after having kids, went back to glasses. Now I have the progressive bifocals and the transition lenses combined. I like them! My middle child has worn glasses since age 15 months. It's amazing what kids will get used to if it helps them!

  5. No glasses, but I keep telling myself I need to go get my eyes checked but haven't yet. I think I at least need reading glasses.

  6. OMG Jimmy, this post made me HOWL because I'm the same way when it comes to my reading glasses. I have three pairs (which I bought in bulk) because I'm FOREVER either losing them or sitting on them. I'm almost to the point of getting one of those 'chain things' I can use to hang them around my neck, so they stay safely with me at all times.

    Funny story....

I wear my reading almost constantly because of being on the computer. One morning last year, I went to take a shower before work and guess what? Yup...I accidentally LEFT THEM ON!!!

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!

    Have a terrific Thursday, buddy!

  7. I hate glasses for just that reason. They're expensive and they always end up getting lost or broken. Plus, I don't feel like I can see as well; I can only see what is directly in front of me and don't have the peripheral vision that contacts give me. Not to mention if I would happen to lose a contact I've got a whole box in the cabinet. Wearing contacts makes me feel like I don't have eye problems at all.
My boyfriend swore by glasses and liked the way he looked with them and never wanted contacts. A month ago he bought contacts and now he loves them.
PS - Google Zenni Optical. Super cheap prescription glasses.

  8. I'm exactly like that. I want to check out the contact for multi vision. I can't conceive how they work but want to check them out. I constantly take mine off and put them down and forget where and they are twisted, scratched and bent.

  9. I also got my first pair in Jr high. I hated them soo much I left them sitting on my desk (by accident, haha), when I went back to get them they were of course gone. I didn't get another pair till I was 18. I've been good with my glasses. I've only had four pairs, I reuse the frames, it saves money.

  10. Hey Pat, “People who don't wear glasses don't understand what a hassle they are.” This is so true my friend, can’t see with them and can’t see without them has always been my experience.

You are very welcome Pat, your post is what got me too thinking of this one :^)

  11. Bijoux, I never wore the hard contacts myself but did wear the soft ones for several years, The progressive bifocals with the transition lens are what I wear also, when I am not reading that is Ha Ha

Pretty impressive for your middle child to wear glasses at 15 months, funny how we get used to what we need as you mentioned.

  12. Hey Tress, If you need an eye exam my suggestion is to make an appointment, because if by chance you do need glasses it’s better to get it done rather than putting it off :^)

  13. Ron, You and I are the same but opposite on this one, I take mine off to read and after being on the computer for a while I will walk away without them, so one of the chain thingies wouldn’t be a bad idea here either Ha Ha

I can just imagine getting into the shower with them on also—too funny

  14. Welcome to our little family Cake Betch, I suppose there are pros and cons to glasses and contacts, the only drawback to contacts with me was I had to get myself sunglasses due to being used to the photo gray lenses so I really never got out of wearing glasses.

Will look at Zenni Optical, Thanks

  15. Hey Barb, I have seen those multi vision contacts advertised, like you I can’t see how they work but would be willing to give them a try.

  16. Heather, Reusing the frames is a very good idea; I try to do the same if I haven’t wrecked my old ones past the point of no return Ha Ha

  18. Drat....and to think that I held the record for having maximum number of broken glasses. I am still stuck with glasses because I am not comfortable with contacts...

  19. Jojo, glad to have you join us, isn’t it funny how you can sit a pair of glasses down for just a minute and it seems they disappear, it must be a glasses conspiracy :^)

  20. Hey Caterpillar, I have so lost count on how many accidents I have had with mine, like you I think I am more suited for glasses than contacts though, good to have you stop by and hope you hang around.

  21. John, I see you see what I am seeing with and without my glasses, hope to see you again real soon Buddy :^)

  22. I have a pair of "reading glasses" from Walgreens, but I only use them to read tiny print. I don't need them for regular type stuff. And it's a good thing, because I never have any idea where they are.

  23. Hey Linda, I have actually gone so far to look for my glasses and get myself so frustrated in not finding them until I look in a mirror and there they are Ha Ha
