Our Last Night

Here is the continuation of Silent Scream, if you missed the beginning story you can go back here to read it Silent Scream, enjoy and Happy Halloween

She decided the blazing red eyes were only a reflection and made her way quietly up the stairs, deciding to let her daughter sleep she laid an ear against her door and listened to the rhythmic sound of her breathing, she sounded a bit raspy so her decision to let her sleep was a good one. Turning on her heel she headed for her own room.

Standing in the glow of the candle sitting on her dresser she brushed her hair, looking at the windows reflection in the mirror she noticed the eyes were there once again, it had been a long day and the tiredness she felt said she was ready for bed.

She blew out the candle and turned in the darkness to look at the window, the eyes were no longer there, she laughed at herself and crawled underneath the covers.

Just as she fell asleep the light in her room flashed a couple of times and then burned brightly in her face, the clock flashing 12:00 told her the power was back on, she peered from her room and saw the light was also on in Jessie’s.

Hey Jess, are you awake? She could still hear the raspy breathing through her daughter’s door, it sounds like you are coming down with something, we may need to go and see the Doctor tomorrow.

As she opened Jessie’s door, the sounds of a squeaking hinge made the hair on the back of her neck stand, and she just about jumped out of her skin when the whole house once again went dark, a rustling sound in the room said Jessie was waiting for her.

In the dark she asked “Jess are you awake?” she listened to the breathing sounds and leaned over the bed to gently shake her daughter awake, something felt strange, like course hair and slick leather rolling away from her, she wondered if Jessie had gotten herself made up for Halloween before falling asleep.

The lights flashed a couple times and then remained on, for a brief moment all she could do was stare, this was impossible Jessie’s bed was completely empty, the covers had never been turned down.

The whole room seemed to spin in circles as she searched for her daughter, the slimy substance on her hand slowly dripped from her fingertips onto the bed.

OK Jess this is not funny, where are you, the only sound she heard was a shrill scratching on the window, the blazing red eyes were once again peering through the window at her, I heard you breathing I know you are here, she opened the closet door and saw that she wasn’t.

At the end of the hallway she could feel a breeze blowing down from the attic, the attic door was standing wide open, a pair of red eyes appeared in the darkness at the top of the stairs, she turned back down the hall a little too quickly and fell right onto her face.

Scratching at the wooden floor with her hands and crawling to get up, she could feel the splinters digging underneath her nails, gaining momentum as she righted herself she could feel a cold breath on back of her head.

At the bottom of the stairs she grabbed for the phone, I have to call Sheriff Tatum, he will know what to do, dead the phone is dead, and for no particular reason she looked for the pinstripe coat that was hanging on the back of the chair, gone, it was now gone.

Glancing toward the back door she again saw the blazing red eyes looking in, she was freaking herself out now, her husband disappeared a few years ago without a trace, and now Jessie is missing, I have to get out of here.

She grabbed the knob and flung the door open, the eyes still there were now coming right at her, she raised her arms pushing her outstretched palms straight into the unseen face, her hands struck nothing and stretched outward into the darkness, she now found herself staring into the face of the blazing eyes as she was pushed backwards through the doorway...

Fifteen years later:

But Annie I got a really great deal on the house, it has been empty for a long time and with a little work it’ll be a great place to raise Tommy, I heard that little Jessie Cavanaugh and her folks disappeared when they lived here, they vanished without a trace, she replied.

I think they packed up and ran off, the economy was really bad in those days, and a lot of people just let everything go and started over, look all the furniture is ours and I can’t wait to get into that attic, you never know what is up there.

I heard funny sounds coming from up there, are you sure that door is locked, he laughed, turned over, and shut the light off, isn’t this great our first night in our new house, we really should have taken Tommy trick or treating, she said.

Next year Annie, there is always next year, he will be a little older then and not as scared as he was acting before you put him to bed, this is just a beginning it’s not like this will be our last night here.
Hey look at the window, I see red eyes and they are looking right at us, don’t be silly Annie it’s nothing we are safe here, a cold chill ran down his spine as he wrapped his arms around her, he could feel goose bumps forming on her arms as the shrill scratching on the window began…

  2. Excellent. You know it's a good spooky story if it makes you want to double lock your doors even though you know it won't do any good.
