Thanksgiving comes first

Walking in a WINTER wonderland, DASHING through the snow, over the RIVER and through the woods!, Oh my goodness is it Christmas already? I am already hearing a medley of Christmas music everywhere that I turn and the Turkey is not even in the oven yet.

Am I NAIVE to think that Thanksgiving should come first?

We actually went shopping today for a cheap Thanksgiving tablecloth for Thursday, but I guess that we were in the wrong time period. Walking into our Dollar store you would have thought that Thanksgiving was already over with, I was more than a little DISILLUSIONED to find nothing Thanksgivingy at all, instead I saw SUPER sized displays of Christmas trees, ornaments, Santa hats, gift boxes, toothpaste, bobby pins and body WAX...oops that was the wrong aisle.

Needless to say there were no Thanksgiving tablecloths, nothing of INTEREST, nothing even close. Cindy and I looked through all the colors of tablecloths and nothing looked just right for our table, she finally held one up and with my answer being a SHRUG of my shoulders, Cindy opted for a multi colored striped party tablecloth instead of one with a Christmas theme, because it's not Christmas yet.

I zig zagged my way to the front of the store with Cindy's multi colored tablecloths, when all of a sudden it was like a LIGHT bulb went off in her head and she shouted, Wait Jimmy, I need some Scotch tape!

It just so happens that Scotch tape was on sale, being that people use it to wrap Christmas presents. I nearly tripped over a BUCKET of Scotch tape marked at the fantastic sale price of "Buy 1 at twice the price and get one FREE" and since it was on sale Cindy had me grab 2, then she began browsing the Christmas decorations.

It was then and there that I had to put my foot down because it's not time to be buying Christmas goodies yet, we have to keep our holidays in order, come on now everybody knows it's Thanksgiving first, then Black Friday, and then Christmas. OK Black Friday was just a joke but that's a whole other post, right now Thanksgiving comes first.

I held Cindy's hand and we walked towards the front of the store...

  1. Nice story Jimmy, I like it and like Cindy I would have to be browsing the decorations too.
In our house it's K's birthday first, then Christmas. From the time she was about four, K objected to the tree or any other decorations going up before her late November birthday. She's 40 now, so it doesn't really matter anymore, but we all still hold off on Christmas decorating until her birthday has passed.

    1. River for your family K's birthday is just as important as our Thanksgiving, she will most likely always require for Christmas to wait until her birthday has passed, it's nice that the family waits before decorating.

    2. We can't do that, Matt's birthday is December 21st!!

    3. Looks like we will wait until after K's and then Matt's, we will be getting pretty close then.

  3. Love it.
And hate the fact that Christmas decorations, carols and paraphanalia have been in our stores for weeks.
I hope your Thanksgiving is wonderful - and Christmas free.

    1. Isn't it sad how commercialized Christmas has become, I am afraid future generations will never know the true meaning of Christmas, they will only know it as a time to shop like crazy and get gifts...

Here's to a Christmas free Thanksgiving for everyone who celebrates it, and for those who don't, Happy Thursday ;-)

  4. You made that one seem effortless!

Yesterday I clicked on one of my 10 radio stations I listen to regularly, only to find that they'd switched to all Christmas music. AND on the way home from Oklahoma on Sunday, we saw at least a dozen houses already lit up for Christmas. I'll admit that one year, we left the Christmas tree up until July (I like the warm glow of the lights!), but we've NEVER decorated this early.

    1. I love seeing all the lights at Christmas but really hate to see them before Thanksgiving, now is entirely too early for lights and for radio stations to be switching over to an all Christmas format.

Like you and Hick we have never decorated before Thanksgiving, but afterwards we have overdone it more than once.

  5. Sadly we don't have Thanksgiving but it doesn't stop me from giving thanks in my own way. I do believe Black Friday has crept in so maybe there's hope yet. Wishing you and Cindy a good one.

    1. It is a very respectful thing for you to take time and give thanks in your own way in spite of not having the holiday, you have a good soul my friend.

I believe Black Friday is becoming more of a week long event rather than just one day, this all can get confusing.

A great day for you too Valerie.

  6. Jingle bells was actually written for Thanksgiving

but I will say, when people often say their thankful for what they have on Thursday then walking over grandmas and have fist fights over TVs on Friday, I start to doubt how special the holiday is.

    1. Interesting fact about jingle bells Adam.

I am afraid a lot of holidays are ruined by those who are only in it for themselves rather than for the family, those are the ones who bring tension nd the fist fights begin.

Hoping for a fist fight free Holiday in your neck of the woods.

  7. You are quite right...first things first. I am forever having to insist on Remembrance Day first before we start to get excited about Christmas. I've often thought it must be difficult to have the Amerian Thanksgiving so close to Christmas.

    1. Delores isn't funny how many people begin decorating, buying, and selling for a holiday at the end of December over a month early.

  9. Yes, Thanksgiving comes first. Our neighbor has had their tree up all month. Several neighbors already have the Christmas lights and lawn decorations up. It's Thanksgiving first.

    Have a fabulous day. ☺

    1. RO, isn't it sad that Thanksgiving seems to be skipped right over, the advertising for Christmas is more profitable I suppose.

  13. As my husband always says at this time of the year, "Stop dissing Thanksgiving!"

Hope yours is a happy one, my friend!

I also wish you both a Happy Thanksgiving.

  14. You made the use of words look effortless. Well done. Totally agree. Thanksgiving has become the step child of Christmas. Not ignored but not recognized as its own day. That is just wrong.

    1. You are correct Patti, it's not that Thanksgiving is being ignored it's just not really recognized, this is wrong and the commercialization of Christmas is to blame in my opinion.

I solved that dilemma years ago. I bought a nice white table cloth and just add the place mats of the season.
    Happy ThanksGiving!

  18. I agree! Christmas music should wait until at least the day after Thanksgiving when they run subliminal messages to "buy, buy, buy!" underneath it!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes at least until the day after Thanksgiving before any Christmas music is played, you are right it seems that it all comes down to advertising somebody's products.

i can relate to this shopping experience .Here it has become so common that such sale which totally and certainly is goes in the benefit of buyer take place and people specially seem to read only the hugely written word sale and get excited about some money ,they don't feel that is just a making fool sign for who don't dig it deep ,count me among them as gigger was hubby lol
