Opinions are like....

I started my blog a number of years back, I originally called it Just My Opinion. I did this as an outlet for myself to give my opinions freely; with the understanding that the only basis to what I was saying is that it was only my opinion. That was a mouthful wasn't it?

I don't talk politics simply because politicians tick me off, but with the political tensions going on now I'd like to use politics as an example only, I am not going to condemn nor promote any political issues.

Opinions are like..... well you know, we all have opinions and it is our right to believe in what we want, if you disagree with an opinion of mine or I disagree with you, doesn't mean we can't be friends, it simply means we disagree on that issue.

People fighting over politics in my opinion is asinine, it seems a lot of folks have all of a sudden made anyone with beliefs other than their own a mortal enemy. Why can't we agree to disagree and move on to another subject?

I don't want any beliefs shoved down my throat so to say, and when you get into a shouting match with someone over any subject, neither person is hearing the other, the louder you shout the less the other person hears. Agree to disagree and move on.

It's hard to walk away I know, but what are you gaining by continuing the argument, no minds are being changed and your opinions remain the same.

Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Green Party, Tea Party, this party, that party, Liberal, Conservative, Left wing, Right wing, no wings, hate wings, love wings.......doesn't matter!

You can be and believe what you want this is your right. I was taught "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" I practice this as best as I can. If I were to debate all the people who are arguing for things I disagree with, I would be getting myself defriended all over Facebook. Isn't this silly?

I don't use Facebook that much anymore, I have seen so many people I know going on there to simply start a political debate, they think it's funny to pick apart someone's beliefs, then have an argument over it, and then dump them from their friends list because they didn't change their mind. This is stupid in my opinion.
two people arguing, agree to disagree
Our Daughter is my complete opposite when it comes to politics, yes we have had heated discussions, yes we make fun of one another, no we haven't converted one another, and yes I still love her, in spite of what she or I believe.

If I were to dump all of my friends with different beliefs then I would have no friends. We all believe differently on issues relating to life, and I love the fact that we do, I would hate to only have friends that are 100% like me.

Just My Opinion has grown to a blog that talks mostly about anything that comes to my mind, from family outings and memories, my opinions or the Truth or Fiction challenge, it is all about the way I see things and I enjoy doing it.

I changed the name to Jimmy's Opinion, changed the url a couple of times, gained a few friends, lost a few for reasons I don't know, and have a few that are still with me from pretty much the start.

If I am on your Blog roll I want to thank you, if you aren't on mine please let me know because it's an oversight. I appreciate my followers and love those of you who comment, you share your opinions as well as put up with mine, I look forward to hearing more of your thoughts as time goes on.

I had a person in the past ask me to provide a source for something I said, I told him that I had no sources that it was just my opinion, he replied "you can't get out of providing sources by saying it's just my opinion" Maybe not but I can start a blog.

What made you want to start your blog?

  1. Why DID I start my blog....of yes, the hubs is deaf and nine times out of ten doesn't have a clue I'm even talking to him. I needed someone to talk to. Pretty boring reason I guess.

    1. Hey Delores, not boring at all, as long as you got it started and are enjoying what you are doing, that is what counts.

  2. I purposely don't talk politics or religion on the blog, well not really. But I too have opinions! And facebook is such a time drain.
I enjoy the "bright side" of your blog. I've started a practice of giving online reviews, but I only review places and things I give 5 stars to and keep the negative ones to myself.
I started my blog after I found and read some boring ones and thought I can be boring too!

    1. Hey Abby, reviews are always interesting, and I like that you only review the places and things you would rate highly, giving negative reviews doesn't always come off the way you intend.

I agree with you on Facebook, I don't really have time for most of the nonsense there.

  3. You are on my blogroll and I'm on yours. I like that. We sure don't have to talk about politics either.

    Have a fabulous day. ☺

  4. I started my first blog 15-16 years ago, after my husband's massive stroke that left him right side paralyzed and without written or verbal language. It started out as a public diary on a support website for others dealing with the same issues. Back then, I also became of aware of Oprah's Gratitude journals and so I started looking for anything positive or funny in my world to write about and doing so it got me out of a deep depression. I've had five different blogs since then as my life changed and I discovered I really enjoy writing.

Once in a while I'll blog about politics but I try really hard not to do it very often. I go to a message board where political debates are encouraged when I need to "talk" about that stuff because I've always been a political junkie. It's anonymous, unlike Facebook and it's moderated so things don't get too out of hand. I hate political postings on Facebook. No good comes from them.

    1. Hello Jean, that was a very good reason to start a blog, searching out positive and humorous posts is an excellent way to help deal with depression and stress caused from caring for a loved one like you did with Don, and through it all you discovered your love for writing.

I have read your political posts and you have always done them well, I have never seen where you intentionally start a fight due to your posts, you have always been a class act my friend.

  5. I have stopped my Saturday Opinion post because no matter what the topic, some people manage to poke me with their political position. I am absolutely done with political conversations, a difficult thing as I am a bit of a junky, because of many of the reasons you speak of (did I say of often enough?). Need to see if you are on my blog roll, if not, that will be remedied soon.

      Thank you Sir.

  6. I started my blog to ease up loneliness with DH on the road so much that and the fact that I like to talk and write letters. It's not that I have so much to say, it's just chatter, usually.

  8. Amen to everything you said! I'm so over hearing about politics! And I'm so glad you came back to blogging! You were missed while away!

I started blogging after a disturbing incident on a forum I had been part of for years. Someone I considered an online friend had Munchausen Syndrome, unbeknownst to the rest of us. Some really crazy stuff went down and I decided to find another online outlet.

    1. Hey Bijoux, you are one of the people who have been with me for a long time and have stuck with me through the times I had to step away for a while, Thank you for that.

Some crazy stuff can happen on those forums, I was on one for quite a while also, a Diabetes support group I figured with my "years of experience" there, that I could help those new to the condition and also learn what is new, I bowed out when some of the members basically told me I didn't know what I was talking about, and the moderators allowed it because they had been on the forum longer than me.....

I'm glad you are here my friend.

  9. My blog was started as a way to build an audience for my writing, which is mostly about art and childhood stories. I also try and steer clear of politics because people believe what they need to believe. Facts are too often irrelevant.

    1. Hi Stephen, you hit the nail on the head when you said "people believe what they need to believe. Facts are too often irrelevant"

You can't change what people think and with politics you never will.

  10. I started a blog after reading a few humorous blogs and thought, I can do that. What I found out was, my humor is more sarcastic and that doesn't go "pen to paper" very well. It's gone through many transitions, a book blog, a movie review blog, ect. Now it just kind of sits there until I have something to say.

    1. Hey Jeff, it's funny how things change from your mind to the page then into the readers minds, I often write something I think is going to make a point and feel that it is never noticed, while the statement I didn't even think of is the one everyone picks up on, sarcasm I think is a lot like that, you hear it in your mind as you write it but no one often hears it the same way when they read it, man if we could come up with the answer to that look how popular we would be.

I know you are taking it kind of slow right now and your readers have slowed down on commenting, have faith Buddy as you feel like writing and get back in a groove the readers will come.

It's good to have you here Jeff.

  11. What made you want to start your blog?

Essentially just to blow off steam. I was working nights back then with a lot of down time between maintenance repair calls. So with an employer springing for the high speed internet and nagging little voices inside my head wanting to get out I started blogging.

  12. Mine started as an extension of what I had already been doing. When I was in middle school, I lived and breathed video games. I idolized my favorite vg magazine and that's what I wanted to be when I "grew up".

Ironically the whole video journalism folded as a career for many after magazines died out. A lot of my favorite writers are now working in other areas.

But I used to write my own reviews on pieces of paper. Nobody possibly would have read them, but i had fun doing it.It was good practice anyways.

Eventually the age of the internet lead me to a website that was about videogames and had a very social media like setup and this existed even before Facebook and Twitter. They had their own blog section.

So I'd write reviews on there and eventually I branched out and started to write about other things. Some people said "this is not the place for that" especially when I got political.

Luckily for me, the site was going downhill (it's now defunct) and someone recommended I just go independent, which was seven years ago in 2010.

  13. I started my first blog back in 2005, to let off (anonymous) steam from some of the stresses of teaching. That one is supersecret, but it's still going, even though I retired last year. Don't get me wrong, the kids were not the issue, it was just some of the absurdities of that career.

Then I started my current blog back in 2011, as I got more into writing. I love joking around with people in the comments. Sometimes they're like hecklers for a stand-up comedy act, which is what I always said I'd do if I didn't have the teaching career. That, or become a lawyer. Because what could possibly be better than getting paid to argue and prove yourself right? Unless maybe it would be a quality control checker for Diet Coke and gas station chicken.

I hate the way politics has driven people the way it has. We have our own opinions and that should be enough.

What made me start my blog? I was told by a few bloggers that my comments were so funny/detailed/long I might as well be writing my own blog. So I eventually did, just over seven years ago. I read back on some of those beginning posts and remember how chatty I used to be. Now most of my original supporters no longer blog or I've lost touch with them and I've devolved into memes and a Friday Fiction story which follows on from the Words for Wednesday meme. I think I miss who I used to be, but I don't think I can get her back.

  16. Well said! I have a political blocker on my facebook so I do not see all the crap. I have friends on the left and on the right. Unfortunately during the election, I had a lot of them delete me from face book. I don't care what side your on, its the kindness of people I look at.
I basically started a blog because It was a better place to share my stories (and opinions) and only those who want to read them can. Unlike facebook.
Sadly Only a couple people follow my blog. Not even my family members.

  17. I haven't known you or your blog for very long Jimmy but am real happy I found it. I enjoy reading your opinions, and agree with your opinion about politics. In my husband's family they could discuss politics til the cows came home, many different opinions but at the end of the day they put it aside and still love each other. I have a Facebook account but rarely go to it. I leave it up to my husband to keep me in touch with the family, and he sends me photos he knows I will enjoy. I just can't take to Facebook, he enjoys it because of family and friends who post and it keeps him in touch with them. He stays away from discussing politics because well you've seen yourself. I won't discuss them either as when I have - and never in a pushy way - I have been stomped on figurately speaking. I got into blogging when I lost all my photos on my hard drive and someone suggested I put them on a 'blog'. Little did I know the world I was opening up and all the wonderful people I would be meeting.

I just put you on my blog-roll blog which you can find on my side-bar.

Isn't amazing how political and religion ideals and thoughts can do to one...I would consider my self politcal middle road with common sense, but I would have to say I lean to the left...But I had been ask if I would go knocking on doors and discuss current issue...Mostly round here it good way to make enemies....Some time in my life I MIGHT need help from a fellow who on opposite side, but I would be willing to help some one see the world different then me...

  21. When it comes to my blog and FB, I pretty much never post anything relating to politics or religion. I don't mind weighing in with how I feel on some subjects sometimes, as long as it's on their site. Like you, I don't think anybody is changing anybody else's opinion anyway, so why bother?
