Getting Myself Killed

When it comes to home repairs I am a do it yourself type of guy, I can fix most things I attempt and the things I can’t, I usually don’t mess up too bad. I always read all the instructions and follow all the safety rules. Does this sound like one of those famous last words statements?

How many of you have ever used a kitchen chair to stand on rather than the stepladder that is just out in the garage? I can say that I have been guilty of this, I have changed light bulbs, installed ceiling fans, painted ceilings, and all other sorts of smart things, while standing on the kitchen chair Cindy said she would kill me for standing on, if she ever caught me again.

I found a rickety old kitchen chair discarded in the alley and brought it home, for the sole purpose of sitting on in my garage, actually it was easier to use this one rather than chance getting killed by Cindy, now that I think back I actually stored it right in front of my ladders.

Cindy caught me painting the ceiling while standing on this chair, she about blew a gasket thinking it one of her good chairs, I told her it was OK that I was using an old chair and it didn’t matter if I got paint on it, she told me if I fell and hurt myself that she was going to kill me.

My chair vanished somehow, not really sure where it went, kind of like my old orange recliner, the one I had when Cindy and I married, it kind of disappeared while I was at work one day, but this story is for another post.

The last ceiling fan I installed was in the bedroom, a safety conscious person will move the bed and bring in the step ladder, shut off the breaker, and have all your tools laid out and the box unpacked.

Cindy walks into the room and finds me balancing on the bed next to the ceiling fan box, screwdriver in my back pocket, black tape in my shirt pocket, wrestling with the wires from the dangling light fixture.

She shakes her head and says as she is walking out of the room, if you fall I am going to kill you. At least I wasn’t using one of her kitchen chairs, and I’m sure proud she didn’t flip that light switch.

  1. Have mercy! She may not have to use her energy to kill you, sounds like you could do it all by yourself! BE CAREFUL!

  4. Heehee, gone are the days when I balanced on arms of a chairs to reach things. I guess we all take risks because they don't seem risky at the time. Getting older cures all that...lol. Looking forward to hearing about the orange recliner.

    1. Amen to that Valerie, getting older does make you use your common sense a bit more on things like this.

    HAHAHAHHAHAAHA! Oh...how FUNNY, Jimmy!

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I too use chairs to stand on, rather than a step ladder. However, that's because I don't own a step ladder - HA!

    Have a GREAT Sunday, buddy!

    Hi to Cindy!

  6. I've two sets of step ladders here...one downstairs and one upstairs, but I have been known to use a kitchen chair from time to time to change a light bulb or fuse...of course I turn off the power first! But I did once get an electric shock from a hair-dryer, not my fault though as I'm always careful about mixing water with electricity.

Your orange chair probably joined my white plastic one...just vanished into thin air!

    1. Hi Megan, We have ladders of all sizes here, so there is no excuse for standing on a chair, but it happens at times :^0

I have had a few shocks during repairs and most were my fault Ha Ha, I have a feeling you are correct about the chair.

  7. We have safety training once a month at work. I'm tempted to use your ceiling fan installation story as the "what not to do" example! Did Cindy take any pictures, by chance? Visual aids are always great for comic emphasis. ;-)

    1. I am happy to say that there are no pictures that I am aware of, yes this is exactly a "What not to do" example that I am proud to say I have learned to do otherwise as I have gotten a bit older :^)

If it will help others to do the right thing I am proud to be used as an example of how not to do it :)

  8. Oh yeah, I've been know to balance on anything handy to reach something. I've only fallen a few times. My wife also tells me to quit using the chairs, "You'll ruin them!"

  9. Yes Sir, it seems the fate of the chair is more important than the bulb that needs changed, heaven knows if we fall they are just gonna kill us anyways Ha Ha
