Big Girl Panties

"Put your Big Girl Panties on and walk it off" I am sure glad I didn’t come up with this statement but sad to say my little Brother did.

A few days ago we were talking and he asked how Cindy was doing, I told him that she was still hurting and it looked like the first of February would be the soonest the Doctor would release her to go back to work.

Tell her I said to "Put your Big Girl Panties on and walk it off", I had to laugh because he and she have always gotten along really well, they always have a comment similar to this for one another and they always laugh about it.

I can just imagine if Cindy were to say to me that she was hurting and needed a hand with something, and I replied with "Put your Big Girl Panties on and walk it off" just how quickly you all would be reading my obituary.

Why is it that Cindy’s Dad or my little Brother can say things like this and get a laugh, no one gets their feelings hurt, and all is still well in the world.

Jimmy messes up and says something like this and no one laughs, the world seems to come to an end, everyone’s feelings are hurt, and Lassie won’t even bark to let anyone know Jimmy’s in the well.

The smartest thing I know to do is to help her out when I can, say yes dear, and smile to myself when little brother makes comments like this.

Cindy was sitting at her computer tonight laughing at a text she got today, a message from my Brother that said, "Put your Big Girl Panties on and walk it off" I just shook my head and said, "I can’t believe that guy"

It’s OK Brother, I did laugh but you know how it is, you get away with this kind of stuff because you are all the way across the country, but I have to live with her.
I am laughing right now as she is sending him a response on Facebook, a stinging reply concerning her Big Girl Panties; Yes I know everyone will get a big laugh out of it.

Do you have a friend or relative that can get away with comments like this?

  1. You're a smart man, Jimmy. Leave it alone and walk away! Never tempt a woman that you share house, or bed with, unless you have a mighty nice doghouse.

    1. Thank You Ms. A, I do my best to stay out of the dog house, because sleeping there is not very comfortable :)

  2. Words have different meaning when they are out of character. I had a friend at work who was always calm. One day someone made a really big error and he calmly pointed it out but with a little bit of extra emphesis. The transgressor said to him, "Well you don't have to yell!" I pointed out to her that there was no yelling and she responded, "For Frank that is yelling!"

    1. Hey Joe, I have known people like that, they can chew you up one side and down the other and never raise their voice while doing so.

  3. Its the sibling thing; I think it takes precedence over the spouse thing. My brother can say and do things I'd never let my hubby get away with. So I kind of get it. I do hope Cindy turns the corner and starts feeling more herself soon!

    1. Hi Betty, It's funny how differently things are taken depending on if you are a sibling or a spouse, Cindy is coming along really well, slowly but surely she will be ready to go back to work after the first.

  4. I always say stuff to Tony and He replies "Oh sure... but if I said that to you, we'd be having an entirely different conversation."

He is so right. (but don't tell him I said that)

My sister and my mother can get away with far more than any one else. And Lord help them, when my sister and Tony get in the room.... well, let's just say that it's a good thing we all know they are kidding.

    1. Hey Juli, Your secret is safe with me, that is unless Tony reads this post :)

Your Sister and Tony sound like Cindy and my Brother, if you didn't know better you would think they were really going at it, a lot of fun has been had over the years just listening to them.

  5. GOOD JOB JIMMY to realize what you can and can't say and yes, some relatives, especially siblings can get away with this stuff.

    1. Hi Betty, I don't mess up near as often as I used to, better to sit back and smile most times, just leave the picking to the siblings and my Brother :)

  6. Interesting how we take things differently, depending on the speaker. I don't mind my kids or friends teasing me about something, but I don't like it when my husband does it. I have no idea why, but I do feel weird about teasing him also.

    1. Hi Bijoux, I have learned this the hard way, Cindy's Dad can make a joke with her and everyone laughs, I make the same joke later and I'm just being mean...sigh

    2. My older brother is the same and gets away with saying anything to Mrs Jones.

This Christmas, when my wife bent over to pick something off the floor, my brother quipped, "Bloody hell, it's suddenly gone dark in here!" She laughed with him.

In contrast, days later, when she asked me, "Does my bum look big in these trousers?" and I replied, "Yes it does a bit - you'd be better wearing the skirt" she sulked for the rest of the evening.

      Women, heh!

    3. Hey Bryan, They are hard to figure out and our Brothers don't seem to help the situation any :)

  7. Okay, first I have to say that I LOVE the photo of Cindy!!!!

    HILARIOUS!!!! You GO, girl!

As Bijoux shared, it's interesting how we take things differently, depending on the speaker. Maybe it's because those we're most closest to, we're more sensitive to.

    Great post topic, Jimmy!

P.S. hope you're feeling better, Cindy!

    1. Hey Ron, We took that picture last time we were in SC, don't remember the reason she stuck her tongue out but I amagine it had to do with something I said Ha Ha

I think Bijoux hit the nail on the head with her outlook on this one:)

  8. Now that you mention it, I say stuff like that and people laugh it off. But sometimes I'm serious!
I hope Cindy's recovery is going well. Be nice!

    1. Hi Abby, Sometimes I am just kidding and get taken as serious, and saying Just Kidding at the end doesn't help me either Ha Ha

She is coming along really well and I'm trying to be nice :)

  9. Yup...the closer you are to someone, the less you can get away with. I can't say anything critical to my husband, but co-workers and friends are an entirely different story.

    1. I think you are absolutely correct, isn't it funny how many times something completely innocent is taken as critical.

  10. I can say just about anything to my persnickety mother because she never takes me seriously.

    1. Same here Stephen, but how well does it work when you say the same thing to Mrs. C

  11. Back when I worked on the fire department, I got away with murder because I always had an innocent look. It didn't matter WHAT I did, someone else got blamed as I stood and watched. One particular incident involved taking everyone's shoes (that they would leave behind, after putting on their bunkers and boots), switching only ONE shoe with another (size 9 left, with a size 11 right) then tying the laces.

NO ONE ever expected the smiling blonde.

    2. Honey, it's all IN the timid and sweet EXPRESSION, not the smile.

  12. Someone ELSE (meaning NOT the devoted spouse) can get away with making a smartass comment a lot easier than a spouse can. Maybe because we're so close to a spouse, and our feelings so vulnerable, the same smartass comment would come across as hurtful criticism. That's what this smartass thinks, anyway.

    1. Hey Susan, "Maybe because we're so close to a spouse, and our feelings so vulnerable" the general consensus comes right down to this, even though at times I think smartass is my middle name Ha Ha

  13. It depends on the day, time, and place. If hubby is smart and he times it well and I laugh. If not he is a Jerk. Women make a lot of sense don't they?

    1. Hey Rachael, I think that is my problem, I tend to pick either the wrong time, place, or day, and sometimes all three Ha Ha

What do they say? Can't live with them and can't live without them :)

    2. I think the can't live with them and can't live without them works both ways. Maybe someday we will figure each other out, but that wouldn't be as much fun, would it?

    3. I agree with you Rachael, trying to figure each other out is what makes life worth it :)

  14. During a slightly heated discussion with my husband once, I was told how nicely I speak with everyone, how my tone is so friendly. I think he wanted that same tone as we were having the "discussion." LOL

    Different people, different dynamics.

    Best wishes to Cindy.

    1. Hi Anita, Isn't it funny how different the dynamics are depending on the person, I had a conversation with my Sister about an argument she and her husband had, it all began with a statement he had made to her, when I asked what if I had made the same statement, and she said well that's different :)

Welcome Anita I hope to see you again soon.
