To Sue, Or Not To Sue

Respect for one another seems to have been thrown out the window by a lot of people. I was always taught to "Take Responsibility for Your Own Actions". I have read a lot of news stories over the last few years where people unhappy with a situation finds someone other than themselves to blame, then sues that person and in most cases wins a large sum of money for being wronged. This is OK if you were truly wronged, but if you are Obese is it McDonald's fault that you chose to buy their product? Or because the cup of coffee doesn't say "Caution Hot" is it their fault when you spill it, I always expect a cup of coffee to be hot when I order it, But now I'm sure glad the cup tells me so.

And how is it right for someone to rob a convenience store and then sue the clerk and the owner of the store because the clerk returned fire with a pistol when the robber pulled a gun, and if he chooses he can also sue the manufacturer of the gun and the bullets that this clerk used. (Because if they had not manufactured these weapons, the clerk wouldn't have had access to them and the robber wouldn't have been wronged) Now come on "Who was really wronged here" I think the robber was IN THE WRONG, NOT WRONGED, but guess who is winning a settlement--THE WRONG PERSON!

Then a prisoner sues the state and prison system when he falls out of bed. Now whose fault really is it that he was sleeping in this bed, he is there due to his own actions and how can he be due a settlement because he bumped his little head by falling out of his little bed after being incarcerated for committing a crime.

OK you see where I am going with this, We all need to take care of each other, Say I'm sorry and mean it when you mess up, Take Responsibility for your own Actions and don't try to blame it on someone else. When we get back to living life and quit looking for a way to make a quick buck at someone else's expense, RESPECT will soon follow. There are a lot of people who actually need help and support, there are true victims who deserve compensation to help with real medical expenses and shame on those who try to manipulate the system to gain a settlement not actually due to them.

  1. I totally agree with what you say. However, one note about the lady who sued for the McDonalds' hot coffee. The way they decided on the settlement was they took the profit that McDonalds makes in one day from coffee. So if you think about that poor old lady who actually needed skin grafts...then it doesn't seem so bad. I guess it is all perspective. But I totally agree with you about all the other cases you cite. In case you wondered...my hubby is a lawyer...so in some cases I have to side with those evil folks..aka...attorneys...it helps pay the bills!!!

  3. Hey Susie,

I really don't have a problem as you know with someone getting help for actual needs, I have a problem with our system being bogged down with bogus cases that sometimes force those needing help onto the back burner so to say.

I'm preaching to the choir again I see Ha Ha, I know your husband has seen the frustration of this more times than he likes and I do believe there just may be a few attorneys out there who are not evil although I have seen a couple that are, knowing you your husband is one of the good guys :^)

  4. Yes Suzi,

It is sad that they actually pull it off sometimes and go on to do it over and over.

One of the men I worked with pulled up to a yeild sign in the company truck, looked back then proceeded to run into a truck that had stopped in front of him, the man had "massive injuries" to his back and neck and sued the water company I worked for, when it went to court the judge threw it out because this man had cased against two other utility companies for the same type accident and injuries, funny thing is one of them was at the same yeild sign.

These type folks I have a problem with.

  5. Well, we sued once. On behalf of our daughter and son. The hayrack ride we were on was hit from behind by a SUV. As the cops were friends of his, no one checked to see if he was intoxicated. My daughter suffered a cracked pelvic bone, and a dislocated hip. She couldn't walk for two weeks and endured months of grueling physical therapy. She now has arthritis in the hip and knee problems. She was forced to give up dance and track. And the settlement? Not large. Enough to pay medical bills, attorny's fees and buy her a car (not a new one). Ridiculous! It also took three years to finish the suit. So it makes me furious when people who are injured by either their own stupidity or lack of common sense sue and win big. Grrr...

But we have to blame a failed legal system that allows this.

If the cup says "caution. hot." and it's not, can I sue?? Lol.

  6. Well said Jimmy. If only people would step up to the plate and accept responsibility, we would be better off. I can't control anyone else, but I can keep my side of the street clean.

  7. BRAVA, Jimmy!

"When we get back to living life and quit looking for a way to make a quick buck at someone else's expense, RESPECT will soon follow."

OMG...this something that really TICKS me off too. People who actually LOOK for something to sue about. There are definitely cases where there is an honest and sincere reason for a legitimate law suit, but often times it's someone looking for a free ride.

"There are a lot of people who actually need help and support, there are true victims who deserve compensation to help with real medical expenses"

    AMEN!

Well said Trisha, stepping up to the plate and taking responsibility seems to be something a lot just can't bring themselves to do.

  10. Thank You Ron,

I'm like you if there is a legitimate reason then I have no problem, it's the bogus lawsuits that do none of us any good.
