Post From The Past

A couple of friends are participating in an event called False Start Fridays where they repost things that were written way back when and either stuffed into a drawer or just never got off the ground, I thought I’d bring back one I wrote back in 2005 that got absolutely no comments, heck I would have commented on it had I read it somewhere else.

Back then I was walking on crutches when I was lucky, but in a wheelchair most of the time, side effects from Diabetes and a couple of TIA strokes had me down for a while, today I still use my crutches or a cane when I am out for a lot of walking, but the good thing here is the wheelchair is parked and I pray it remains so.

Let me know what you think of this post from the past.

Things that make ya say Hmmmmmmmmmmm

I have been especially busy these past couple of weeks going to Dr. appointments, Physical therapy, X-rays, MRI's and so on and so on. It's not like these are new to me but it just feels like they are all coming together lately. I went to see a new Dr. this week for my shoulder, been having some problems there I guess since starting to use the wheelchair more often now (but that’s another story).

While sitting there filling out the forms I noticed a young man across from me also filling out forms as it appeared to be his first visit also. He had what looked like a back support around his waist and his right wrist was secured to it in the front, He was really struggling to fill out the forms with one hand and really had a hard time getting up and walking when his name was called to go back and see the Doctor, But the nurse was patient and assisted him through the door and down the hall. I thought to myself there is always someone in worse shape than you and was glad to see the nurse being so patient with him, as he had no crutches to help him walk and with his wrist secured to the support he couldn’t use them if he had them anyways.

I was called back shortly after him and after a short visit with the Doctor I was sent for more X-Rays in the same building. While sitting there waiting to be called back for the X-Rays I was thinking Man haven’t they done enough X-rays and tests, I understood going to a new Doctor and not really knowing him I was going to have to re tell my whole medical history to a guy I wasn’t really sure of and was going to be there a while and was not looking forward to it. Then from out of no where I saw a site that really got me to thinking.

This young man that was having so many problems in the waiting room was walking out of the Doctors office with his back support rolled up under his arm, He had a spring in his step, No more indication of pain in his eyes, and as he swiftly strutted by me I came to realize "Man This Is The Doctor I Been Needing To See All Along!!!!" He cured this young man in one visit.

As I said earlier, there is always someone in worse shape than you. I will accept my pain and use my crutches and wheelchair to get along and feel secure knowing I am telling the truth. I would never want to gain back the spring in my step in exchange for the knowledge that I had lied to beat the system to gain whatever this young man thinks he gained by not being truthful about his condition. There are people who really need these Doctors and people "Beating the System" just add to these honest peoples pain when they have to prove that they are really telling the truth. If you have to Lie or Hide to do something then you are Wrong. I appreciate honesty and feel sorry for the ones that feel they have to lie to get by in our world. I feel blessed to know I aint that bad off.

  1. Jimmy, I'm afraid I don't understand what happened here. The young man was faking a condition? I've heard of people faking medical problems to get disability or worker's comp, but they don't leave the doctor's office cured. They keep faking it. I'm confused here!

    1. I was really confused on this one too, he was so pitiful in the doctors office but away from his office in the common waiting area for x-ray he actually had the brace under his arm and was strutting away with no problem.

I don't know his story to this day but it really ticked me off to see what I considered either a miraculous cure or a case of faking it.

  2. I wish doctors were that good! People that milk the system, whether it's at the doctor, or anywhere else, really anger me. There are so many that truly need help and aren't getting it.

You were blogging in '05. I hadn't even heard of it yet! You KNOW I would have left you a comment, if I had.

    1. Hey Ms. A, The ones milking the system really make it hard for those who actually need help.

Yes Mam I was blogging back then, this was one of many posts with no comments at all, and I know that you would have been one that would have commented had you known me then :)

  3. Aparently that back support was pinching a nerve that crippled his wrist. Thank GOd that Doctor figured it out and told him to take it off!

    1. Hey Joe, Isn't it wonderful the magic some Doctors can work.

  4. I've heard of people going to a chiropractor and feeling immediate relief from their pain. Maybe that is what happened here. Most of the time, though, it's a much slower process. I, too, wonder what this young man's problem was.

Wow - blogging since 2005. I'm with Mrs. A, I hadn't heard of blogging yet!

    1. I have never had the luxury of feeling relief that quickly before, it normally takes quite a while longer for me.

I had to look back to check when I started, June 2005 is when I joined Blogger :) not a lot of posts the first few years though.

  5. I hate people that use the system for their own agenda. It's THOSE people that make the honest feel like they can't or shouldn't get the services they actually need. *sigh*

    So frustrating.

    1. Hi Juli, It is very frustrating when people use the system because like you said it does burden those who actually need help, there are a lot of folks out there who fight to get themselves able to go back to work, and others who are only looking for a way out of it.

  6. We really know a guy who is just like this. Outdoors, he stumbles to talk and uses a cane to walk. He gets every benefit going...but we know what he is like when a soccer match is on T.V. by the way he shouts and screams at the T.V.! He even runs up and down stairs, lifts heavy items around the house and uses exercise bikes in the "privacy of his own home".
I keep saying that he will be having a stair-lift puts in next as, believe me, he has every other gadget going...but strangely enough, no nurse or physi
    opherapist visits...I wonder why?

    1. Hi Megan, Yes it does sound like the man you mentioned is definitely putting on a show, the gadgets will continue to come as long as he can continue pulling the wool over his Doctors eyes, myself I don't think I could be that good of an actor.

  7. I read Bijoux's comment to you first, because that's what I was going to ask too..I was a bit confused by this story.

As she shared, I know that some people fake illness for something like workman's comp or to get disability, but they usually keep faking it. I live in a city where A LOT of the people do this because they're looking for a handout or free ride.

In this case, perhaps the doctor did do something in his treatment to help this young man (like a cortisone shot) which relieved the pain instantly, so that's why he walked out of his office looking completely different.

    1. Hey Ron, You never know there could have been some sort of a treatment that fixed him right up, I still don't know his story but to this day I wonder what he had going on.

What ticked me off at the time was I had gone from cane to crutches, then crutches to wheelchair and had a rotator cuff injury from the chair, I still thought I was going back to work.

In walks this guy in so much pain and couldn't even motivate, I really felt sorry for him, then next I saw him was away from the Doctors office walking through the common waiting area to the exit like nothing was wrong.

I hope it was a simple fix for him but at the time it really got to me.

      Good to see you Buddy!

  8. Wow, I didn't realize you were such an "old-timer" in the blogging arena. I am duly impressed. Gives you lots of fodder to re-run from time to time when you're at a loss for ideas. (If you're ever struck with such a malady.) Anyhow, good post. It's too much of a credibility stretch to believe that guy was miraculously "cured". It's a shame when someone games the system like that, and essentially steals valuable resources that could be better used for someone in genuine need.

    1. Hey Susan, That is my biggest problem with these situations, the Doctor could actually be concentrating on someone with actual problems rather than wasting his time.

Thank you my Friend, this Old-Timer appreciates your kind words :^)

  9. Fascinating story about that young man. Makes you wonder the rest of the story. I was wondering if he was a drug seeker and doing lots of drug seeking behaviors before he saw the doctor, but after he saw the doctor and the doctor saw through him and told him "NO DRUGS" the guy realized he had been discovered and suddenly miraculously was cured. But maybe I'm just a bit cynical since I type medical reports all day and can spot the drug seekers almost immediately when I'm doing a report of one of them. But glad to hear in the long run it seems like you are doing so much better with your health since 2005!

Is this your original blog since 2005? I started blogging in 2005 when AOL had journals; they closed down in 2008 and everyone there either came over to Blogger, gave up blogging, a few ventured onto Word Press. We had a nice community on AOL; hard to sometimes get that same community here on Blogger; too many blogs I think. I've not kept the original journal though; I tend to delete and start new ones a lot and disappear for a bit from blogging, but I still have friends that I follow their blogs and they follow mine since 2005; it truly is a great way to get to know others and see how other people live!

    1. Hi Betty, Typing medical reports I am sure you have seen your share of stories, I wonder from time to time about this young man, the town we lived in at that time I knew most people and he was one that I didn't, so this makes me wonder about him also.

I started with Blogger in 2005 I actually had two blogs one was "Just My Opinion" and the other "Rebel With A Clue" to make a long story short I combined them and deleted a bunch of posts that I should have kept, but at the rate I am going there is still plenty to read Ha Ha

  10. It's interesting how we all conjure narratives from little slices of life. I guess we'll never know what this guy was up to, if anything. If he was faking, it's hard to believe he'd admit it in front of the doctor, but why then was he in a doctor's office to begin with unless he was scamming someone---but obviously not the doctor so what's the point? Very interesting. Had you written a post that was straightforward I doubt you'd now be receiving so many comments. Very interesting.

    1. Hey Stephen, Yes Sir it is interesting how we all describe the slices of life we experience, it brings out our view of the situations that others do not see.

The feedback everyone has given here has sure helped me look at this young man from different angles, I still pray that he wasn't running a scam and was actually cured so to say, but I suppose I will never know.

  11. You never know with people, do you? Faking a disability or illness to get benefits etc is the lowest crime imaginable. I bet you felt like legging him over. Sorry, my unsympathetic side is showing again! I am surprised you didn't receive comments on your original post because I found it interesting and informative, as all your posts are. You have an aptitude for narrative, Jimmy ... then and now.

I was interested to read the comment from That corgi :) ... hey I was an AOL person, message boards, forums, journals, all enjoyable. And it is right, AOL was a community in itself. I struggled when it all broke up.

    1. Hi Valerie, Yes at the time I wanted to get my hands on him in a sense, I felt so bad for him until I saw him walking past me in that outer waiting area, heck I couldn't have caught him had I tried but looking back now I wish I had at least talked to him.

I was never involved with AOL, and my early blogging days had no followers so to say, was still of a mindset that if I wrote it everyone would see it Ha Ha

I like our little group here and feel blessed to have all of you read my opinions and slices of life :)
