Free Eggs

I have been kind of holding off on doing a “Chicken Update” but here goes, you remember the Chicken With No Name that joined our family last month, if you don’t then click the link and get a laugh at where this all started.

I did build a small “A” shaped coop/shelter and fenced in a small area with chicken wire attached to the existing fence behind my shop, and the chicken we are calling Happy is an egg laying fool as they say, in the last seven days she has graced us with six eggs so I suppose she is earning her keep, pretty good for a “free” chicken right.

As you know there is nothing for free, Cindy did go ahead and talk her husband into buying some more chicks as you already figured and for the last couple days I have been drawing up plans and buying supplies to build a new chicken coop for the new flock that will be joining Happy behind the shop, they are quickly outgrowing the temporary cages I have for them and joining Happy just may come quicker than expected.

Today I spent figuring out and building nesting boxes, tonight we went and bought more lumber and paint to match the shop and garage, they asked which paint we wanted I said the cheap stuff, he said well what are you painting, Cindy said we need “Chicken Coop Paint” the man laughed and said seriously what are you painting because if you buy the cheap stuff you will use twice as much paint than if you go ahead and buy the expensive stuff it’s not like you are really painting a chicken coop, I told him yes sir I am actually painting a chicken coop, he replied then the cheap stuff is what you need.

This little egg layer that came into our life for free has added six more chicks, about $200.00 worth of lumber and wire, paint, feed, and a lot more work than I had expected to do, especially taking up the space behind my shop, but look at it this way there is a positive that came with this little chicken named Happy.

Now we don’t have to buy eggs

  1. Ummm at least eggs don't raise your blood sugar and they can be used in so many ways. Scrambled, fried, sunny side up, in cakes, cookies and so many other things. And just think...come Easter you will have lots of eggs to decorate. Maybe when we meet in Riverside you can bring me some!!

  2. Sorry, I can't help but chuckle. This would make one of those commercials, you know the ones... chicken-free, lumber-$200, eggs-priceless! Wait, that isn't exactly price-less, is it? Ok, just consider it an investment, with returns.

The way this kind of stuff would go around here, I'm better off BUYING eggs. Much cheaper in the long run.

  3. Now when you get eggs, you have to decide if you are going to EAT them, or let them turn into cute little chickies!

  7. Hey Susie, Good to see you Lady!! Yes the eggs do come in handy they were a hit at the fourth BBQ we had as a deviled egg platter :) and you never know when we meet in Riverside there just may be some eggs involved or even some squash as the garden is doing well.

Ms A, Looking back this post does sound like one of those commercials Ha Ha, the investment is growing right now but the fresh eggs are a bonus, gonna take a lot of eggs to catch up.

Hey Joe, My plans are just for eggs, not planning on more chicks but you know Cindy, I wasn’t actually planning on this :)

Good Morning Peg, I’m thinking the lifetime supply of eggs right now

Yes Sir Pat, Omelets sounds like a plan. Thank You my Friend

Thank You Kristy, You never know one just may show up anytime :^)

  11. I've always wanted chickens. But I'm slightly afraid of them, so I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to gather eggs. Glad Happy found a home and is doing well. Have fun with your chickens and enjoy those eggs! If you get enough, you could even sell some and recoup some of that cost!
