Not Like The Movies

Isn’t it funny how the relationships with your siblings change, as you get older?

Being the firstborn my title as Big Brother gave me the responsibility of training those who followed, out of the goodness of my heart I did everything in my power to make sure no harm came to the little ones.

Sneaking off with my little brother, to play in an automobile wrecking yard may have not been a smart decision, neither one of us were old enough to go to school yet, and Mom had told us not to play there, but we went anyway.

I could say that little Brother ran off and I had to go and bring him back, out of the goodness of my heart I saved him, but the downfall of this story was I didn’t bring him back.

I could somewhat go with the truth, I could say the reason he got locked into the trunk of that junked car was because I put him there, to protect him, yes protect him, this story just may fly.

Yes I was trying to protect him, heck there could have been an escaped convict that liked dark headed little boys, his hair was dark and mine wasn’t so I had no choice, out of the goodness of my heart I closed the trunk lid.

None of these explanations would work on Mom, she is too smart for that so when I walked back home without little Brother I knew I most likely would be introduced to a bit of Hickory Tea.

After a while trying to convince her that I had not been to the wrecking yard, and I didn’t know where Little Brother was, the truth came out, he was bothering me and I tricked him into the trunk and closed the lid.

A conniption or hissy fit would be the normal reaction for most women, but not my Mom, she coolly scanned the area, looked into her pocketbook for things she may need, and flew like the wind toward the wrecking yard.

I followed as fast as my legs would carry me, actually I was being dragged by my Mom while she asked which car he was in, even though I couldn’t remember, I think the kicking and screaming coming from the trunk most likely guided us to the right vehicle.

The trunk was definitely locked, but how many times have you heard of a simple thing like a lock keeping a Mom from freeing her child.

Mom reached into her pocketbook and withdrew a tool that many women used for situations like this, Mom brought out the sacred Bobby Pin.

A Bobby pin can be used for many things, things like cleaning out your ears or under your fingernails; they make good paperclips when you don’t have one, you can even hang Christmas ornaments with them, I have even heard of Girls using them to hold their hair in place.
But my Mom used this one to unlock the trunk, not like in the movies where they pretend to open a lock, Mom really made it work, and little Brother was saved.

Now that we are grown Little Brother and I get along great, he is my big little Brother as I am about five foot eight and he is now five foot thirteen, so needless to say I am not sticking him into any trunks.

And out of the goodness of my heart, I do my best to not tempt him by standing too near an open trunk myself, because now that he has outgrown me, I don’t want to end up kicking and screaming for Mom from the trunk of a car.

Just remember kids, that little brother or sister you are picking on today will most likely outgrow you.

Do you and your siblings get along any better now that you are grown?

  1. Did you get any hickory tea? If that didn't qualify you for at least a swig, I can't imagine what would.

  2. Oh my gosh! I can just imagine your mom's anxiousness as she was trying to free your little brother from the trunk of that car. Kinda of cute story to retell now years later though. My siblings and I get along better too as we have grown and matured. I was always closer with my brother (closer in age) than my sister and that's still the same these days :)

    1. Hi Betty, Yes it is much funnier now, I do remember being impressed at how quick she opened the trunk.

I like how much better we all get along now, not that it was really bad then but now it seems much easier.

  3. I've actually attempted to open a lock with a bobby pin and failed miserably. That's a pretty special talent. I think they only teach that skill in International spy school?

    1. Hey Ken, International Spy School and Moms :)

I think if I had a bobby pin and had to use it to escape, I'd be trapped.

  4. My brother and I haven't spoken in ten years. He is very rich and leads a millionaire lifestyle, and he decided my family was a poor embarrassment. He also abandoned our parents.

    1. Hi Stephen, Some people get on their High Horse so to say and end up missing out on the blessings right in their own family, I too have some who have distanced themselves like this and it is a sad thing in my opinion. I hate it when people look down on their loved ones in this manner.

I am sorry you have to deal with this my friend.

  5. The makers of those bobby pins have a lot to be proud of. Strange, I never thought of using one as a paper clip. Sadly I have no brothers or sisters and I now know how much I missed out. Friends are not as easy to play tricks on as a younger sibling. Yes, I definitely missed out.

    1. Hi Valerie, I have actually seen the bobby pin used as a paperclip, I'm not saying it works real well but I suppose it serves the purpose in a temporary sort of way :)

Yes Friends are not as easy to play tricks on as a younger sibling is, but yet then again some friends are Ha Ha

  6. That is a horror story for a mom! I don't have a relationship with my brother. Sadly, I think he has some psychological issues.

    1. Hey Bijoux, I am afraid a lot of us created horror stories for our parents at one time or another, and I most likely did more than I realize.

Issues like you mentioned can distance families for sure, in mine I always hold out hope that they come back around one day, you never know it could happen.

HAHAHHAHAHAHA! Jimmy, that CRACKED ME UP!

Oh, you were a bad little boy, weren't you? But then again, so was I! I can't even begin to tell you the horrific things I did to my younger brother, Tom, when we were kids.

But it's funny because he and I are the closest out of all my siblings.

    Grrrrrrreat post, buddy!

    1. Hey Ron, I was sitting back thinking of things we did to one another when we were younger and began typing, I could most likely do a whole book on this subject, but I really don't want my siblings ganging up and locking me away in a trunk Ha Ha

My Brother and I get along great now, he actually came and stayed with Cindy and I for about a year and helped remodel the whole house, no one got locked away then so I hope this is all out of our system now :)

  8. This was great-got a good chuckle at your "goodness"! I have 9 siblings! Some old enough to be my parent! But, being number 9 I had the fortune standing of being "older" sister to my youngest brother number 10.
We got along okay, as long as he did what I told him!
    We are great friends now!

    1. Hi Rachael, "We got along okay, as long as he did what I told him!" that is what it boils down to, and the sad thing is most times they don't Ha Ha

I am sure glad we outgrow some of this, and become the friends we were supposed to be then :)

  9. Now this is getting a strange. First I learn that you and I go through the same ritual before casting our ballots. Then I discover that we're both the oldest among our siblings, and that we both tormented our younger brothers. What next?

    1. Hi Joe, Sitting down and making sure that we make informed decisions I suppose does make us a bit strange, especially when compared to those who have no clue.

Tormenting the younger siblings I think goes along with being the Big Brother, I think that is in the handbook also Ha Ha

  10. When I first started reading this, and saw how you "did everything in your power to keep the little ones safe", I'm thinking, "Wow, he's a saint!" HA! So, you're like most older siblings, after all. My brother (6 years my senior) was particularly good at "taking care" of me. Like the time he parked me on the handlebars of his old bicycle (no fenders, of course) and took off on it like a bat out of Hades with me hanging on for dear life. Oh, and the times he played games with me that involved throwing a knife. Natch, I was the hapless target. But somehow, we both survived, and get along just dandy now. (Maybe because he's too old to ride a bike now!) Another fun post.

    1. Hey Susan, I just had to clear the record here a bit, I know all of you think I am practically perfect but just to let you know by this post, I'm just a typical big brother Ha Ha

Lordy the bicycle ride with your Brother I can almost see, and like you said we do survive and for the most part get along now :)

  11. I'm the oldest of five. It's a thankless job, being the oldest. You have to fight for every right and privilege, and then your younger siblings get those just handed to them.

One of the very few perks of being the oldest is that you can beat up and scare your younger brothers and sisters. I enjoyed that for a few years, but gave it up a long, long time ago. I love 'em too much, plus they are all almost 5,000 miles away. :-/

    1. It is a thankless job, and yes they do get away with almost everything, beating them up and scaring only works till they get bigger than you, then it pays to play nice Ha Ha

  12. HA! What a story - a junker trunk! Plus, any story's good with an awesome mom as a character.

My oldest brother is 15 years older than I am, so he was like an uncle when I was little, but now that we've aged, we're more like bro and sis. My other brother is just 2 years older and we've always gotten along great. Don't tell them, but I've always liked being the little sister with the two older brothers to run interference for me.

A little Sister having a couple of older brothers run interference for her sounds like you have it made, your secret is safe with me ;^)
